For every body, ages 2-102. Or perhaps we should say, 117. Maria Branyas Morera, who lived to 117 (d. 2024), possessed a gut microbiome characteristic of someone decades younger, according to studies published in Cell Reports Medicine. Her gut was rich in anti-inflammatory bacteria, specifically high levels of Bifidobacterium and Actinobacteriota, which are typically associated with younger, healthier individuals and reduced inflammation.

Key findings regarding her, as reported by the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre and others, include:

Rooted in Soil, Guided by Science 🔬 SCD Probiotics began in 1998, not as a company, but as a question.

I was a soil science student at the University of Missouri, working out of my garage, during a time when the organic food movement was still finding its footing and scientific understanding of microbial ecosystems—both in soil and in the human gut—was far behind where it is today.

My path into this work was personal. I had watched cancer take the lives of people I loved deeply—my mother during high school, and my grandparents while I was in college. Those losses drove me to search for ways to reduce the chemical burden we place on our bodies and our environments.

I believed then, as I do now, that people deserve to live and thrive in cleaner, more natural systems—without constant exposure to unnecessary chemicals in our homes, food, farms, and communities.

That search led me to study soil science and microbial ecology through research in Costa Rica at EARTH University and in Japan at the University of the Ryukyus. It was there that everything came into focus. I saw firsthand how soil-based organisms—microbes that have evolved alongside plants, animals, and humans—are fundamental to healthy ecosystems. These organisms cycle nutrients, build resilient communication networks between plants, break down organic matter, and help restore balance where systems have been depleted or disrupted.

Many of these same microbes have been used for centuries in traditional fermented foods. Others are essential to living soils. Straight from our Kansas City headquarters, we bring you the monster-sized, horizontal tomato plant that just won't stop producing fruit. It fell over in August and has been horizontal ever since, happy as can be. This plant is really going crazy and even though the first frost is upon us we harvested 16 large heirloom tomatoes from a single plant yesterda.

🍅🍳Fried green tomatoes anyone?

Our HQ is located in an industrial area, but we just had to plant a small pollinator garden that was full of bees and hummingbirds flitting around all summer. We used as a soil amendment to boost the organic matter in this plot, as well as monthly watering with SCD BioAg. We think it really made a difference!

Now is the time to start tucking those beds in for winter and we recommend spraying your fall beds with beneficial microbes to ensure proper decomposition of leaves and all organic material left over from the growing season. Fall is a busy time in the soil -- the right time to boost your soil in preperation for next spring.
