Day 13 of The One Inside book is about compassion, and this is where you get to know the hard to love parts of you. One thing that makes getting to know these parts tricky is all the other parts they upset.

Some of the hardest parts to show compassion to are the parts of you who are addicted. They cause a lot of damage to your life and your relationships.

When you can get space from the parts who are angry and ashamed of the addicted ones, you can begin to get to know them.

What we know is that all parts are welcome, all parts have a positive intent, and all parts have a function.

Addicted parts are often the protective firefighters in your system who are trying to help put out the emotional fire when your young exiles are triggered.

There are lots of wonderful programs to offer support as you connect to your addicted parts. On episode 74 of The One Inside podcast I talked with Nadine Lucas about addictions and IFS. She asked me to add this disclaimer to the episode. If you haven’t listened to this episode yet you can find it in one of the links in my bio or here :

“DISCLAIMER – This podcast with Tammy Sollenberger was presented in January of 2021 and is outdated. It is important to note that PATH to Healing Addiction and Underlying Trauma is not a 12-step program. This podcast represents my personal journey from two years ago as I was trying to integrate my 30-year experience with overeaters anonymous and my understanding of Internal Family Systems. I respect 12-step programs and prefer to continue my healing with IFS and PATH, guided by Self. Please explore the PATH website and see how we have evolved! www.path2recovery.org”

Relationship conflict can cause one or both partners to feel overwhelmed, or “flooded.” This physiological arousal sometimes leads to stonewalling, one of Dr. John Gottman’s 4 predictors of relationship instability.
