Our next Board Member Spotlight: Antonette Acosta-Dickson, MD
🌟 Where do you practice: Meritas Park Plaza (in the northland, off I-29 and 64th Street), affiliated with North Kansas City Hospital (newly NKC Health).
🌟 How long have you been in practice: 21 years
🌟 Do you have any special interests (OB, sports med, full scope, etc): Cancer survivorship
🌟 What is your favorite part about being a FM doc? Relationships and being part of patient's and their families' lives
🌟 Why do you love the KCAFP and how long have you been on the board? Joined the board 21 years ago. It's great to be around like-minded colleagues.
🌟 What is a favorite hobby or something interesting about yourself: I grew up in the Philippines and moved to the US in 1999, so I am fluent in Filipino (Tagalog) in addition to English.
🌟 What is one thing you wish more patients knew? We love taking care of you, but also need to take care of ourselves and our families. Docs are equally frustrated about the inefficiencies and bureaucracy of our current medical system as patients are, so please always treat our staff with respect.
🌟 What is your favorite resource that you use while working as an FM doc? Up to Date

🌟 What is your favorite part about being a FM doc? Long term relationships with patients. Taking care of the whole family. Helping patients to meet their goals.
🌟 Why do you love the KCAFP and how long have you been on the board? 3 years? I enjoy having the opportunity to engage with my peers.
🌟 What is a favorite hobby or something interesting about yourself: gardening, spending time with family
🌟 What is your favorite resource that you use while working as an FM doc? My community. I get a lot of support from the people I work with. My nurse is always a calm presence and helps to tackle challenges.

In February members of the KCAFP joined one of the largest contingents of the Missouri Academy of Family Physicians at our annual Advocacy Day in Jefferson City. We met with Representatives and Senators and provided testimony on healthcare-related issues, including Prior Authorization reform, telehealth regulation, scope of practice concerns, to***co law changes, and reimbursement rate issues with insurance companies. It is fascinating to experience firsthand the efforts required to effect significant change in healthcare policy. It was again a delight to meet with Speaker of the House Rep./Dr John Patterson who has been a great champion of healthcare initiatives.

The KCAFP invites all general members interested in serving on the board to attend our upcoming meeting. It will be held on February 10, 2025, at 6:30 pm at the Grand Street Cafe, located on the plaza at 4740 Grand Ave, Kansas City, MO 64112. At this meeting we will formally install our next Executive Board. The Missouri Academy of Family Physicians' annual Advocacy Day in Jefferson City provided a unique platform for Family Medicine medical students, residents, and physicians to engage with state legislators and discuss issues concerning Family Medicine and medicine in Missouri. Stay updated on legislative matters that impact physicians by joining the Missouri Academy of Family Physicians and be informed about next year's Advocacy Day date to participate in advocating for the medical community in Missouri.
