For families facing movement disorders, hope begins with progress. And today brings a reason to believe. 💙

A discovery at Children’s Mercy is moving closer to becoming a new oral treatment option for conditions like dystonia and Parkinson’s disease. Dystonia is a disorder that impacts about 1 million people, and often begins in childhood, affecting everyday moments like walking, eating and speaking.

Designed to help better control movement while being easier to tolerate, this potential therapy offers real hope for families who have waited far too long for better answers.

This is why research matters. And why we keep pushing care forward, for children, for families, and for the future.

While in the hospital for flu symptoms, 5-year-old Callan’s heart stopped. It didn't start again for 4 days. A huge team came together quickly to support this little cowboy through myocarditis – inflammation of the heart muscle, usually caused by viral infections.

Critical Care team members performed CPR on Callan while traveling down several floors to meet the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Team. ECMO would act as Callan’s heart and lungs until his own could work again. It was all-hands-on-deck: Callan needed emergency surgery to drain fluid from his heart and kidney dialysis as well.

Callan’s family believes it was the combination of medical science and miracles of faith that led to his eventual recovery.

With support from his family and multiple Children’s Mercy divisions, Callan was able to go off ECMO after 12 days and begin inpatient rehab with our therapy teams. Before long, he was quoting "The Sandlot" and tossing football spirals – surprising everyone with his resilience. After 43 days in the hospital, cowboy Callan rode home – healthy, hopeful and ready to focus on simply being a kid again.

What if the perfect match didn’t come from AI or an algorithm, but an actual human?

That’s how it works in our POPS (Parents Offering Parents Support) program, where Patient and Family Engagement Specialist Katy holds hundreds of families' stories in her heart. Katy connects parent mentors like Cassie, Denae, Tara, and many more with families in a similar situation.

Any parent or caregiver of a Children’s Mercy patient can request to be paired with a mentor: someone who understands the complexity of having a child with significant medical needs. Katy then looks for similarities between the requesting family and the list of mentors – all of whom are vetted volunteers who want to help answer questions and provide support for someone walking a similar path.

Behind every brick at Children’s Mercy is a story — a story of generosity, persistence and hope, written by women throughout the years. It started with our founders, the Berry sisters, and grew by leaps and bounds thanks to incredible women like Adele Hall, Helen Sutherland, Betty Henson and Elizabeth Ann Hall.

Their dedication and commitment to caring for every child continue to grace our hallways, guide our purpose and inspire brighter futures for families across our region. 💙

What happens when a community shows up with heart and purpose?
A record $5.5 million raised in one night. 🔥

Our 22nd annual Red Hot Night helped propel Illuminate past its $150M campaign goal, proving what’s possible when generosity leads the way. Thank you to every donor, partner and supporter who made this milestone moment possible.

Proof that small treats can make a big difference. 🍪

Last week’s check presentation showed how generosity in our community can make a meaningful impact. Through Cookies for a Cause, Chick-fil-A 113th & Nall and CFARaymore raised more than $5,000 to support pediatric care at Children’s Mercy.

Thank you for helping us care for kids and families when they need it most!

It’s time to ball! 🏀 The Big 12 tournament is in full swing (or should we say full court?) here in KC and fans are hyped for the games. To join in the fun, mascots and cheerleaders paid a visit to Children’s Mercy yesterday, serving as a furry and friendly reminder that no matter what the score, this year’s for the kids.

Thank you, Big 12 Conference, for the assist to make our hospital visitors smile. They’re huge fans of the teams, and we can’t wait to see our Kid Captains out on that LED court these coming days. Here’s to all the big-time fun and bracket-breaking ahead.
