In 2018, then 29-year-old Austin Hill, father of 3, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of stage IV stomach cancer. Despite quick action including surgery to remove the cancer and HIPEC, a procedure that involves filling the abdomen with heated chemotherapy drugs, the cancer remained. That wasn’t the end of Austin’s story. His cancer team found he qualified for immunotherapy. A treatment that used his own body’s immune system to target the cancer. Surviving childhood cancer is not the finish line, it’s the beginning of a lifelong journey.🎗️

Research shows that more than 99% of childhood cancer survivors face a chronic health condition, and 96% experience a severe or life-threatening complication related to their treatment by the age of 50. That is why survivorship is a core pillar of the research we fund at Braden's Hope For Childhood Cancer.

We recently announced our Super Six Research Grant recipients and we are excited to shine a light on each study. We proudly funded an impactful project led by Dr. Carolyn Bates and Dr. Kari Struemph at The University of Kansas Cancer Center.

This initiative is designed to support childhood cancer survivors as they transition from pediatric to adult health care - a critical and often overwhelming phase where too many young people fall through the cracks. This research is an investment in helping survivors not only live beyond diagnosis, but thrive well into adulthood because we know the fight doesn’t end when treatment does.🎗️

Stay tuned for exciting updates on their research.

Proton therapy is particularly beneficial for treating children and adolescents with cancerous and noncancerous tumors. Children are at a significantly higher risk of late effects from cancer treatments compared to adults. Two-thirds of children who survive a cancer diagnosis face at least one chronic health condition. One-fourth of pediatric cancer survivors face a severe or life-threatening side effect from treatment that occurs later in life. These include heart damage, lung damage, infertility, cognitive impairment, growth deficits, hearing loss, vision loss, secondary cancers and more.

Thanks to treatment advances, including radiation, pediatric cancer survival rates have dramatically increased to nearly 85% today from 10% only decades ago. One of these advancements, proton therapy, reduces a child’s risk of experiencing harmful long-term side effects. Proton therapy limits and reduces radiation doses to healthy tissues and organs while delivering curative doses to the cancer. Learn about proton therapy: https://bit.ly/3K37IEe
