OSIG members. I wanted to make you aware of an opportunity for medical students of all years. I would contact them directly on their "Contact Us" page if you have questions specific to the UMKC program since our medical school is non-traditional. This organization is designed to get women and ethnic minorities involved in orthopaedics, however don't let this discourage you from applying if you don't fall into one of those categories. Apps are due January 16, 2015.

Additionally if you scroll down the page, they are offering housing grants to attend the 2015 AAOS conference which has a Medical Student Symposium (yes actually targeted at medical students) put on by Nth Dimensions. The AAOS meeting is an excellent place to network and learn about the world of Ortho outside of the hospitals you may visit in medical school. Over 15,000 surgeons were in attendance last year. The deadline is December 31st, and you must have your registration fee ($150) and flights($200+) already paid for.
Student travel funds are not approved for individual interest groups to give out; it is a separate part of the finance office and requires special individual applications. However, there are several members of OSIG familiar with this process. Contact Sadie if you are interested. The deadline for the housing grant is Dec 31st.

Ladies of OSIG(and interested men):

Please consider attending this conference directed at women in Orthopaedics and Engineering. Dr. Jarka (a pediatric foot and ankle specialist) from children's mercy will be present as well as many other professionals and leaders in Orthopedics. It would be an excellent opportunity to meet other women in the field and get guidance on how to get involved with/apply for Ortho.

See the email below for event information.

We have a very exciting day planned, and we’re glad you’re joining us!

A few things:

1. VOLUNTEER TRAINING: Friday, October 10, 5pm Main Lobby of UMKC School of Medicine 2411 Holmes. We will go over the hands-on workshop modules, safety, and program schedule and assign tasks for program day. Volunteer training is highly recommended.

2. PROGRAM DAY: Saturday, October 11. Volunteer registration is 8:15-8:30. The course ends at 3:30, and it typically takes us 30-45 min to clean-up. We’d love to have you for as long as you can stay throughout the day.

3. PROGRAM SCHEDULE: Attached. Faculty speakers, please arrive at least 20 minutes before you are scheduled to talk so we can get you set up. You can bring your own laptop or a flash drive to upload your talk to ours.

4. CONTACT INFO: Contact number on volunteer & course day is Jess Penman's cell at 203-907-7091. I will not be traveling with this program and all last minute requests/needs should be addressed with Jess directly (jpenman@udel.edu).

5. GUESTS: You’re welcome anytime during the day. Please sign in when you arrive and take a name badge.

6. DIRECTIONS: Map attached. You can park in the parking lot at 28A (entrances on E 24th Terrace or E 25th Street) and walk across Charlotte Street in to the UMKC Medicine Building. The workshop will take place in the auditorium right inside the main doors on the first level.
