After seeing the care and compassion his wife received during her time at Saint Luke's Hospice House, Ron knew he wanted to be part of the group that was making a difference each day. Shortly after his wife passed away, Ron became a volunteer, hoping to extend the same care his family had received.

“My family and I were treated with such respect and love that it made an extremely difficult time more bearable,” Ron says.

At the Hospice House, Ron provides support to patients and their families through in-room visits, offering empathy during a difficult time.

“The opportunity to be involved in this atmosphere has provided me with additional support on my journey, a new purpose for my life, and a sense of belonging,” Ron says. “It’s a great feeling to be able to provide comfort and understanding. At Saint Luke’s Hospice House, I don’t feel like another volunteer. I feel valued and part of an incredible team.”

Thank you, Ron, for the incredible empathy you show patients and families! 💙

We had a very special visitor at Saint Luke’s Hospital The Children’s SPOT! NASCAR driver Josh Williams stopped by on his national hospital tour, presented by Optum. 🏎️ 🏁

He spent time talking with kids and families, signing autographs, and handing out cozy blankets and socks that brought a lot of smiles and excitement to their day. We’re grateful for partners who help create joyful moments like this for our patients and their families.

Bob’s kidneys were perfectly healthy until the pandemic. When the 72-year-old pastor was diagnosed with COVID-19 in 2021, it triggered severe inflammation throughout his body that badly affected his kidneys. He was placed on a ventilator for five weeks at a hospital in Rolla, Missouri.

“I woke up to my granddaughter blowing me kisses in a hospital room,” Bob recalled. “That’s the first thing I remember.”

Both of Bob’s kidneys struggled to recover after he was discharged, and he was placed on dialysis. Doctors determined the damage was permanent and that Bob would need a kidney transplant. He and his family did some research and learned about Saint Luke’s Hospital Abdominal Transplant and Multispecialty Clinic, so they reached out to schedule a consultation.

After a series of tests, Bob was placed on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. In January of this year, five years to the month after he was first hospitalized with COVID, he got the call that they found a match.

“Fatigue had come to define my daily life. And just like that, I felt it all melt away," he said.

Saint Luke’s is a leader in kidney transplantation—performing the first successful kidney transplant in the Kansas City area in 1969 and the first living kidney donation surgery via laparoscopy in the region. The Saint Luke's kidney transplant team is one of the most experienced programs in the region, having performed nearly 2,500 transplants with below-average wait times and above-average success metrics. Their life-saving work is made possible through the selfless gift of organ donation.

Ever wonder where those blood and tissue samples go after your appointment? This is it—welcome to the laboratory!

Here, trained laboratory professionals are like the detectives of health care, unlocking the mysteries of every patient’s health. They use specialized equipment to analyze biological samples to diagnose, monitor, and treat illnesses. Up to 70% of all clinical decisions are based on lab work results. Saint Luke's East Hospital has one of the largest labs of all our hospitals.

Medical laboratory professionals are science enthusiasts. They have backgrounds in fields like biology and chemistry and have passed certification exams to qualify as lab scientists. Their job requires sharp attention to detail for evaluating test results and very strong technical skills to operate complex machinery.

Next time a provider says you need lab work, you can think about the skilled and intelligent person doing that test while you wait for the results. Help us wish them all a very happy Medical Laboratory Professionals Week! 🔬 🧪 🧫

Heart transplant recipients made a special visit to all four ICUs at Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City in honor of Donate Life Month, the same facility where they received their new hearts. 💚

These incredible individuals stopped by to thank the teams who played such a vital role in their journeys. They shared stories, laughter, and even left behind a few small souvenirs as tokens of gratitude. For some, it was a meaningful reunion with the caregivers who helped save their lives.

Staff members said one of the most touching parts was seeing former patients healthy and thriving—something they don’t often get to witness after discharge. Moments like these are powerful reminders of why they do what they do.

To our transplant recipients, thank you for coming back to inspire us. To our ICU teams, thank you for the life-changing care you provide every single day. And to the organ donors and their families, thank you for the gift of life.

Right now, more than 100,000 people are waiting for an organ transplant. Most of them need a kidney, which you can donate while you’re still alive.

The wait time for a kidney transplant is significantly reduced when the kidney comes from a living donor. Patients who donate a kidney can still live normal, healthy lives with regular monitoring. Saint Luke’s has been transplanting kidneys for more than 45 years, and last year performed its first robotic-assisted living donor kidney transplant.

Dr. Matthew Wilkinson, a Saint Luke’s transplant surgeon, emphasizes that the decision to become an organ donor is incredibly selfless and one that the care team shows the utmost respect for every step of the way. Hear more about organ donation from Dr. Wilkinson on Health News You Can Use.

First-time expecting mom and patient advocate Barbara, 42, developed numbness in her right arm, blindness in her left eye, and a headache that felt like lightning on her face. The sudden symptoms led her to seek emergency care in November 2025 at her local hospital.

At 33 weeks pregnant, Barbara was diagnosed with type A aortic dissection—a life-threatening condition where a tear occurs in the aorta, which is the main artery carrying blood from the heart to the body.

Barbara was transported to Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City, and Saint Luke’s cardiovascular, OB-GYN, maternal-fetal medicine, and NICU teams worked quickly to save both Barbara and baby Averie.

Dr. Leanna Mosher, a board-certified obstetrician gynecologist with Saint Luke's Hospital Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists, delivered Averie, the first baby born in the cardiac surgery operating room. After the delivery, the cardiovascular team was able to work on treating Barbara's type A aortic dissection.

After replacing the aorta with a prosthetic graft, Dr. Alexander Pak, a board-certified and fellowship-trained cardiothoracic surgeon with Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute, repaired her heart valves.

“The teamwork and cooperation were amazing. Dr. Mosher and her team, our cardiac anesthesiologist Dr. Matt Schwartz and his team, and our heart-lung perfusion teams’ abilities to safely accomplish both surgeries were truly remarkable,” says Dr. Pak. “Also, the intensivists in the cardiac surgery and neonatal ICU were integral in ensuring successful outcomes."

Barbara and Averie stayed in the hospital for two and a half weeks to recover and were discharged in mid-December. Now, mom and baby are doing well—Averie is almost eight pounds and growing and Barbara’s recent CT scans are looking good.

Even though it was a weekend, these kids came to LEARN! 🍎 ✏️ 🩺

BJC Careers and Saint Luke's South Hospital hosted a higher education community open house for young students to learn about careers in health care. They got a glimpse into the equipment, patient populations, educational requirements, and career pathways from team members who have been through it all themselves. A guided walking tour also gave them an inside look at areas like the operating room, laboratory, and rehab gym.

Inspiring the next generation of health care heroes is the greatest honor.
