🍂 Thanksgiving Pet Safety Tips! 🐾

Thanksgiving is just around the corner! 🍗 We want to remind you to resist those puppy dog eyes and keep in mind these tips to make your holiday pet-friendly:

🦴 Avoid Toxic Foods:
Skip the turkey bones, chocolate, onions, garlic, and anything sweetened with xylitol. They can be harmful to pets!

🍗 Mind the Table Scraps:
Stick to plain, pet-safe foods like small amounts of turkey (no skin or seasoning), plain green beans, or mashed sweet potatoes (without butter or spices).

🤫 Safe Space:
Create a quiet, cozy area where pets can retreat if the holiday chaos gets overwhelming.

🐾 ID Up-to-Date:
With doors opening to guests and all the excitement, ensure your pet’s ID tag and microchip info are current in case they make a dash outside!

Take a Tip from Sawyer! 🐾

Sawyer wants to remind you: always keep your pets safe outdoors! Whether it’s on a leash, a tie-out, or in a fenced yard, keeping them secure can help prevent accidents and unexpected trips to urgent care.

Unfortunately, we’re not sure what kind of mischief Sawyer got into, but when he came home, he had a large open wound on his front leg. To make matters worse, this active pup ended up ripping his stitches—calling for another visit to urgent care!

Luckily, Sawyer is an excellent patient and is now on the road to recovery. Let’s all take a page from Sawyer’s story and keep our pets safe!

From Stray to Safe: Please take a few moments to read Simba's story!

Last week, we shared photos of Simba, one of the pets who received a Carhartt coat through our outreach program. Understandably, many were concerned about his well-being, worried that Simba might live exclusively outdoors.

We’d like to share Simba’s story—one that highlights the power of compassion and why our nonjudgmental approach matters so much.

Simba was once a stray, roaming the streets for weeks and scavenging for scraps to survive. A family in the neighborhood, despite facing financial struggles and a full household, took Simba in and wanted to give him a better life.

When Simba became restless in the home because he only knew life outdoors, his family reached out to us for help. Here’s what we’ve done together so far:

- Neutered Simba at no cost, helping to reduce his urge to roam.
- Provided a safe tie-out and doghouse so Simba could enjoy outdoor time safely. (He’s already broken two tie-outs—we’re working on an even better solution!)
- Provided a kennel and ensured Simba sleeps INDOORS at night and is brought in during bad weather.
- Recently, we noticed Simba needed fresh straw to stay warm and comfortable. The next day, we returned with supplies, food, and plenty of love.

When we visit, Simba greets us with pure joy, almost as if he knows we’re here to help. His family’s gratitude—hugs and heartfelt thanks—reminds us why we do what we do.

Simba’s journey is a beautiful example of how a little extra support can transform the lives of pets and their owners. Stay tuned for more updates on Simba as his story continues...❤

Cheeta's Cherry Eye Repair! 🍒

Would you believe these pictures were taken just HOURS apart? Thanks to our skilled veterinarians, Cheeta was able to have his cherry eye fixed that was causing him discomfort – all at NO cost to his owner! 🐾❤️

Cheeta and his owner are currently unhoused, and a surgery like this would have been out of reach without the support of our nonprofit organization. This is just one example of how we’re making a difference in the lives of pets and their families!

Spreading Warmth 💗

While on outreach we regularly give out supplies to pets living outdoors and in houseless camps in our community but yesterday we got to provide a special gift to help pets through the winter - a sturdy, weatherproof Carhartt coat, along with pet food, leashes, beds, straw and other essential items. The gratitude in these pet owners’ eyes said it all, relieved they had something that would help protect their pets through the biting cold.

This moment wouldn’t have been possible without Scott Poore from On A Mission KC, who joined us in the camps, saw the need firsthand, and set out to do something about it. He rallied his supporters, making it possible for these resilient pets to receive coats that will literally help save their lives this winter.

But there’s so much more we need to do. Kansas City winters are unforgiving, we need your help to keep this life-saving work going. Please consider donating to our Tails of Hope campaign below. As temperatures drop, cats (both feral and pet) often seek warmth in car engines and wheel wells. Before starting your car, take a moment to tap on the hood and check around the tires – it could save a life.

Phlo’s story is a reminder of how important this is. Last year, he came to our urgent care with severe burns after his owner discovered him trapped in the car engine, halfway to work. Phlo was covered in burns, but thanks to care and treatment, he made a full recovery.
