Renee was admitted to Kindred Hospital Northland after experiencing severe abdominal pain. A CT scan showed she had a twisted part of her colon (a sigmoid volvulus) along with swelling and a blockage. She was taken to the operating room, where doctors performed a sigmoidoscopy, removed part of her colon, and created a colostomy to help her heal.
Not long after surgery, on May 11, Renee went into cardiac arrest and had to be placed on a ventilator to help her breathe. A tracheostomy was done on May 22, and a chest tube was placed to drain fluid from her lungs. Once she was stable, she was transferred to Kindred Hospital Northland for continued care and recovery.
Renee began breathing trials right away to help her come off the ventilator. At first, she practiced during the day and returned to the ventilator at night for rest. She made steady progress, and on June 16, she was completely off the ventilator and had her trach removed.
While working on her breathing, Renee also began physical therapy. After spending time in bed, she had become very weak and had lost strength and mobility. With help from her therapy team, Renee worked hard each day to rebuild her strength. She was able to sit up in a chair and transfer in and out of bed with support.
Thanks to her determination and the support of her care team, Renee is now ready for the next step in her recovery, a rehabilitation center where she will continue to gain strength and independence. "I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for the great team at Kindred," shared Renee.
