Did you know that darker-skinned individuals need sunscreen too? The skin's melanin (pigment) does provide some protection from the sun's rays, but it is not 100%. Darker skin usually provides an SPF of roughly 8 - 18. It is recommended that one should have an SPF of at least 30 to help protect the skin. So, supplementing with sunscreen is a must. It is a myth that darker-skinned individuals can't get burned from the sun. Sunscreens will help prevent that and the darker patches on the skin that come from the sun.
