Today we're highlighting 5 herbs you can use instead of White Sage! For reasons we avoid white sage, check out our previous post last week on Why We Do Not Sell White Sage.

Due to over-harvesting and the lack of access for Indigenous peoples, Harvest Moon Botanica, as well as quite a few other stores, no longer sell White Sage. Check out our previous post on 'Why we do not sell White Sage' for more info!

These 5 alternative herbs have just as much power and ability to cleanse your space and without the contribution to unsustainable practices!

GARDEN SAGE: It has all of the properties of White sage and is easily grown in a planter or your garden.

ROSEMARY: Cleanses the space of negativity, with a focus on also uplifting the energy and protecting the space. Also extremely easy to grow in a planter or garden

YERBA SANTA: Cleanses the Space of negativity with an added focus on strengthening the Third Eye and psychic abilities, and connection to the Sacred Feminine and the Moon.

CEDAR: For cleansing and grounding, especially in new spaces. Also easily foraged in the Midwest!

MUGWORT: A powerful cleansing and protective herb, that can help with dreamwork or strengthening the intuition. It can be grown or sometimes foraged in the Midwest.

These are just a few examples—what else would you add to the list?

It's the Time of Year to Start thinking about your Garden! While it's a little early to be planting Most plants outside, now is the time you want to be turning the soil and adding nutrients to help feed your plants throughout the year! This is also a good time to Start seeds inside, so you have your plants pre-grown and ready to be put into the ground in April!

Can't afford seeds? Check out Ruiz library and their extensive seed library! We are so thankful for their resources that extend beyond books. For a beginner herb garden, we recommend covering your basics: sage, oregano, parsley (bonus you might get swallowtail butterflies to lay their eggs there!), thyme, basil, mint (grow in a contained pot or garden bed or it will spread rapidly!). Be sure to grow plants you use and are excited about to keep that motivation going even when it gets hot!

If you're a forager, start looking around at what's poking up from the ground! We've spotted some crocus, violets, and wild ginger making their way. 🥺

Thank you to Ms. Candy for the photos of her garden last year for this post!

Indigenous people all over the world have been using plants and the smoke they produce for various benefits, like driving off insects, and to prevent disease. Research has shown that the smoke from a variety of herbs is highly effective in reducing airborne bacteria. The smoke’s ability to purify and disinfect the air was maintained up to twenty-four hours. Many of the pathogenic bacteria had not returned to the same room, even after 30 days.

Smoke also is deeply symbolic. It ascends to heaven, as if bringing any prayers and intentions up to the gods with it. From the incense of Asia and Europe to the sage and cedar of Indigenous Americans, the smoke generated by plants has a primordial history of use as part of spiritual practice.

Simply put, it can help clear the air on a physical as well as energetic level.

Traditionally smudging is made up of four important elements:
🌊 The container – symbolizing water
🌿 The sacred plant – symbolizing earth
🔥 The lighting – symbolizing fire
💨 The smoke – symbolizing air

So when do we smudge?
– When you move homes
– Before you meditate
– On a full moon, to let go of unnecessary baggage
– When you want to lift your mood
– After negative house guests have left
– After an argument with a significant other or friend
– On a new moon, to usher in a fresh start
– If you’re feeling sluggish or exhausted
– When you wish to “spring clean” your house
– After an illness
– Just because

Today, on International Women's Day, we celebrate and spotlight 3 women who have made waves in the status quo that have changed the world. Women who inspire us to make waves ourselves, and fight for the world we want to live in:

Vandana Shiva: Ecofeminist and activist also known as the "Gandhi of grain", best known for her Anti-GMO, and her anti-Ggobalization works. Vandana Shiva is a warrior against Monsanto and the use of pesticides and for the Green Movement around the world.

Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer: Biologist, Professor, and Author of Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants, as well as The Serviceberry, Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer informs her research with both Western science and Indigenous environmental knowledge in a method she portrays as a "Two-eyed Seeing" approach.

Harriet Tubman: Abolitionist, spy, and suffragette, Harriet Tubman was a deeply spiritual, courageous, intelligent women who saw the suffering of the people around her and took it upon herself to change not only her circumstances but also circumstances for the 70 slaves she led through the underground railroad and countless others through her fight in abolishing slavery, her work as a spy in the Civil War, and her work in pursuit of Women's Suffrage.

These women are all heroes in their own rights, who fought, and still fight, for connection, education, and freedom from oppression. And they inspire us to do the same.

Tell us what women inspire you in the comments! 👇

Smoke cleansing is a tradition that has developed in nearly every culture around the world. The burning of sacred herbs is a beautiful way to both symbolically and physically cleanse your space of negative energies and even bacteria from the air. 🌿💨 So it's no wonder the Southern Californian Native tradition of smudging with White Sage, and the cleansing tradition of Central and South America with Palo Santo, became a popular practice for many people.

👎🏽 Unfortunately, due to mass production of White Sage bundles and Palo Santo sticks, and a lack of care from those producers for sustainable harvesting, the White Sage plant has become endangered and is slowly going extinct. This makes it incredibly difficult for the native people who have been using this plant for generations to access it for their ceremonies and personal uses. And while we are not yet in dire straits with Palo Santo, it is important that we stop the destruction before it gets any worse.

We stand in solidarity with those native peoples by not selling or recommending White Sage or Palo Santo at our store. Instead we offer MANY other herbs, woods, and resins that can be used for the same purposes!

If you're going to buy Palo Santo make sure its been sustainably harvested before you buy.
With White Sage, it's better to just stop using it all-together if you are not part of the closed cultural practice. Stay tuned for a list of alternatives to white sage to be posted later this month. 👀

"Why should a man die when sage grows in his garden?" — Martin Luther, early 1500s

Garden sage has been known and used for culinary and herbal purposes for centuries. This low-growing evergreen shrub is popular in nearly every European cuisine and its unmistakable peppery flavor makes it a popular flavor for proteins, soups, cheeses, vegetables, and even some puddings. Sage is also a powerful herb in teas, tinctures, and balms, as it is helps strengthen your nervous system, is antiseptic, and helps improve cognitive function, memory, and concentration.

HOWEVER, these days Sage is mostly known as a popular herb for smoke cleansing and spell work for self purification as it can ease grief and loss, bring healing and protection, and increase wisdom.

When using sage, make sure you're using blue sage or garden sage....keep an eye out later this week for our post on why we do not sell white sage at Harvest Moon Botanica.

Get ready folks! The March Full Moon, also known as the Worm Moon, crests at 5:39 a.m. on March 3rd....and it's bringing in some big energy.

This Full Moon is accompanied by a Full Lunar eclipse creating a 'Blood Moon', which is when the moon moves through Earth's shadow and gains a reddish hue. It ALSO occurs on the 3/3 Portal Making it a powerful time for planting the seeds of your manifestations.

The balance of the moon opposing the sun in Pisces and the grounding and focusing energy of Virgo means that this is the perfect time to set manifestations and practice spellwork that feels meaningful and that could lead you to some real-life upgrades.

Let's put that into practice by "planting the seeds of intention."
☑︎ Write down your goals, desires on small pieces of paper.
☑︎ Plant them in pots alongside seeds of your choice.
☑︎ Don't forget to water & fertilize (and put in a place where it gets plenty of sun!), just like our intentions need active care and a healthy environment to grow into reality.
☑︎ Continue to care for your seeds as they grow into plants and the plants will symbolize the growth and care you're putting into your manifestations.

🌕 Full Moon pro tip: Put out your crystals and water to charge under moonlight!
