We have all heard of birth affirmations and if you are a birth worker you probably say them in your sleep! However, simple, positive self-statements, not geared toward labor can be beyond powerful too.
Recently, I supported a first time mama who experienced intense anxiety leading up to, during, and after she received her epidural. Even though everything was perfect (blood pressure, mom’s HR, baby’s HR, mom’s oxygen, etc.) the mom felt off. Her body was numb from the waist down, which was a bizarre sensation for her. Enter positive self- talk! While her mom stroked her hair, I reminded her that nothing was wrong and then we repeated after one another,
“I am ok. I am safe.”
We recited these effortless statements until she fell asleep. I used to do this all the time when I ran half marathons. If it wasn’t for positive self- talk, I’m not sure I ever would have made it to the finish lines at races. Self- affirmations can create new neural pathways in the brain, which I find fascinating and use as a daily reminder for myself to hype myself up and to help my mamas feel safe and supported!
