For the new October issue, the Chronicle set out to find answers through our America’s Favorite Charities special report, which identifies the 100 organizations that raise the most in private support — cash and stock gifts only — from individuals, foundations, and companies.

Organizations are ranked based on the average amount they raised annually from 2021 to 2023, the most recent year for which data is available for all groups.

No. 1 on the list: United Way, which raised $2.62 billion over that time period.
