Since 2009, For Strange Women has created perfume exclusively from plant aromatics. We source beautiful plant extracts from around the world and value sustainable practices. Botanical perfume can provide the spirit a connection to nature, the mind comfort, and the body an influence to calm or energize. We know that natural essences in just the right arrangement can transport the wearer to another time and place. These compositions are designed to create an experience that is beyond sensory aesthetics; conjuring memories from natural landscapes, experiences, and atmospheres remembered deep within the subconscious. Although mainstream culture presents perfume as a cosmetic to conceal other scents or to make us more attractive, we seek instead to create a sensory ritual that provides a connection to nature through its ability to communicate with our senses. We find natural perfume to be genderless and feel that the scent signature of our skin should be complemented, not hidden. Most of all, For Strange Women perfume is intended be worn as a personal indulgence and source of inspiration. For those who are normally allergic to perfume, this is typically a reaction to the chemicals hidden inside synthetic fragrances. We find natural plant oils to be safer and more satisfying to the senses. The complex scent arrangements evolve as they are worn and fade gracefully throughout the day.

A silent, small township of weathered buildings surrounded by abandoned landscapes and a gravel road. A chord of orris, sweetgrass, and cabreuva wood emulates a foggy morning with mountains in the distance. Indoors, a toasty note of coffee imprints the room as if recently occupied, yet no one can be found.

Vixen is inspired by my home in a wooded patch of Kansas City. When I had chickens in my backyard, a red fox would run around my house, and I was torn between loving it and knowing that this predator was not to be trusted. This perfume combines the deadfall wood, animalic undertones, the humidity at dusk preceding a thunderstorm, and the dry woodlands ready for the storm.

Rose is an earthy floral, often misrepresented by perfumes and products claiming to contain it, but actually using geranium or isolate molecules to save on expense. When we say something contains rose, we source directly from the farms of Morocco, Turkey, Bulgaria, and others with hundreds of years of experience. True rose is grounding and full-bodied, complex and often with a dark profile.

We hope you all love the last charred drops of GORGON 🖤 We are working to bring the new perfume into the lineup but did not expect Gorgon to be gone already so give us a few days to stock up! We are bringing back our favorite from the last year of limited editions, and so far our in-store customers agree she’s the new favorite.

It’s a challenge for us to keep up with production with such a small crew. Most of our formulas contain around 20 aromatics, and with twelve perfumes in the main line, this means hundreds of raw materials that need to be continuously stocked, diluted, measured, mixed, and bottled in our studio. In order to bring in a new perfume, we must retire one for balance.

GORGON, first introduced in 2020, will be leaving the line at the end of this batch.

The Gorgon, a female monster with venomous snakes as hair and eyes that could turn others to stone, is a dark myth about beauty transforming to tragedy. This aromatic tribute opens with burnt amber and frankincense, settling into a heavy stone base with traces of opopanax and metal. Peru balsam, tonka, and dry fossilized woods temper the intensity of this otherwise feral and uncompromising perfume that conjures the medusa within.

Hinoki Resin Soap - we make these glycerine soap bars 10 in a batch, then wrap each in biodegradable shrink wrap to keep the scent in, then dress it up. By “we” I mean Tara because this is one of those tedious things we save for her. We may be out of stock during the holiday season because these require extra time to make, so if you love them - now is a good time to stock up 🖤

Swallowtail is a perfume filled with this butterfly’s favorite things. A smooth opening of pawpaw fruit and orange blossom is playfully woven into sweet lemon leaf and banana peel to create an eccentric fruit accord. A heart of Milkweed blossom draws you into its stunning vanilla-lilac fragrance as it nurtures the native population.
