Week 17 pic! A lot has happened within this past month; from dealing with a crazy respiratory bug that doesn’t seem to want to leave, to an unexpected bleeding episode (baby is ok and this is actually pretty typical and normal for women to experience in their second trimester), to us girls celebrating all 3 of our birthdays! Through everything that happened, I’ve reminded myself of the importance of listening to my body, vocalizing my needs, and honoring the boundaries I put in place while staying positive in my body’s capabilities to heal and grow this little baby. To say it feels like I’ve run an ultramarathon is an understatement but it’s a testament to acknowledging that women are truly remarkable beings!
I am strong. I am safe. My baby is strong. My baby is safe and healthy. My body and my baby are capable.

Our team is growing by ONE! We are beyond excited to be welcoming baby 💙BOY💙 this September! We are joining YWCA USA and the Women’s March organization in their efforts to bring awareness to the multiple current attacks on reproductive rights. Best time to clamp…when the cord is white.

To clamp the umbilical cord more than 3 minutes after birth is essential for term newborns' health and development. Today, my most elaborate work on cord clamping yet is published, a review written together with Judith Mercer , professor in Midwifery, and the author of many important papers on cord clamping for several decades.
We hope to provide an updated, balanced text on the current "knowns and unknowns" regarding the practice of cord clamping, useful for nonprofessionals as well as midwives, obstetricians and neonatologists alike.

Language matters!!

We are so bad as health care professionals at saying “oh she delivered” or “I delivered her” (I’m guilty too).

But we didn’t deliver anything really did we. You did. We assisted in a birth for sure.

When we say “oh I delivered her baby” we can take ownership for something we don’t own.

It also sounds so clinical and medical. We deliver pizzas, newspapers, post. We birth babies.

There is incontrovertible evidence that the language we use around birth matters and has profound impacts both at the time of birth and afterwards. So let’s all be a little wiser with our words.
