There will be many opportunities in life when creating healthy and effective boundaries will allow you to protect yourself from behavior of others that might be harmful or hurtful.
When we set boundaries, we allow others the autonomy of choosing their own thoughts, feelings and actions while preserving our own right to choose for ourselves what we think, feel, or how we act/react.
"Letting go of the urge to control others and instead focusing on one’s own behaviors frees up energy that can be directed toward more fruitful endeavors."

The space around us can influence how we think, react, and create. In a recent article about boosting our creativity by harnessing our environment, author Jeffrey Davis suggests that many of us who work in places that involve creating or developing new ideas often don't have the workspace that inspires or supports that creative work. He continued that when we find the different environments that excites and inspires us, we can bring elements of that environment into our areas of work as physical cues of the feelings and energy we want to have.

An article in ACA's publication, Counseling Today, counselors and educators, Amanda Winburn and Amy King say that "when used intentionally and in a structured way, selfies can become a therapeutic tool and a way to spark self-reflection, engagement and connection with younger clients." Of course the article suggests some guidelines when taking selfies in sessions like asking for permission and taking the picture on a device not connected to the internet to assure confidentiality is in tact. The article continues to articulate how taking selfies in session "can serve as a visual and relatable way for them to track their progress in therapy...[and] can document physical aspects of improvement and growth in ways that a client may not notice without a visual record, such as smiling or holding their head up more, sitting tall and appearing more confident."

If you're ever anxious or worried about going to therapy, here's a comforting message from our skilled therapist, Tatiana M., LMHC:
"Therapy to me is the opportunity or place to address any mental struggles that impede living the full life we all deserve. Anyone should come to therapy if they desire to understand themselves better or receive support while navigating the tribulations of life. I always strive to help people feel safe, heard, validated, and less alone in their existence."

Therapy shouldn't be another source of anxiety or burden on a client or potential client. Of course, the thought of being vulnerable can cause some anxiety, but therapy can help to ease that anxiety during your first session and help you feel comfortable to continue to be vulnerable and motivate you to work on healing.

A goal of Sunrise Therapy is to provide a space where clients can thrive.
Studies suggest the importance of the therapeutic environment by saying it is essential to a client's willingness to be vulnerable to heal while in session. A therapeutic relationship between client and therapist is also an important factor in healing.
When asked about why people should come to therapy, owner and therapist Joey D. states, "People should come to therapy so they can dig deep into their emotions/thoughts/spirits to understand their complete metaphysical self. This will help them to understand their meaning and purpose of life."
A client will be able to do that if the space for therapy is one that is warm, comfortable, and secure enough for them to be vulnerable.
A study done by members of Texas Women's University revealed that "the physical environment of the therapy room is associated with a clients overall level of comfort. The qualitative results also suggested that the physical environment has a significant impact upon the ability of the client and therapist to establish a therapeutic relationship."

You don't need to be on the brink of giving up to benefit from therapy.
Many people believe that it's only when we are completely broken that therapy is the choice to put things back together. Therapy can be the listening ear that we need to put things into perspective, the calming and reassuring voice that reminds us of what we are capable of, the encouragement that leads us out of confusion and helps us see the options inside of us and around us, or the catapult to lasting change BEFORE things crack.
Therapy doesn't have to be the "last option" of hope, but the proactive approach instead of a reactive attempt to heal.

Take a moment and think about your strengths. What are they? When did they develop? What were the circumstances?

Strengths develop when we go through difficult times-- could it be that those difficult times are strengthening those traits that e already have?
