About our Resident of the Month:

James M. Clarke holds a Doctorate in Art Education from the University of Houston and is nationally recognized for his many contributions to the field.

He began his career as Director of Art, Dance and Theatre for Aldine ISD where he created a nationally recognized PK-12 program winning many awards and served on the committee which developed the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Program. He was a Professor of Art at University of Houston and he authored several art textbook series for Pearson Publishing. His state and national leadership as President of the Houston Art Association, Texas Art Education Association and National Art Education Association, made major impacts on national education policy.

He co-founded the Texas Coalition of Quality Arts Education Association and was appointed by the first Bush Administration to chair and write the first National Art Standards for public education as part of a committee alongside then Governor Bill Clinton. He also dabbled in TV production with the Secret City tv series, a PBS distributed art show for children.

James is also an accomplished artist in several mediums, including painting and pencil work.

In 2014, James suffered a massive stroke, limiting his mobility and ability to speak. As part of his recovery, he has continued to produce art and his drawing Beyond the Fog and won 1st Place in the Katy Museum Art show. He also helped to create an art class for stroke and brain injured adults with a local non-profit organization. We applaud you James!
