Congratulations to 111 Harris Health nurses who were recognized by the Good Samaritan Foundation and are recipients of the Excellence in Nursing Awards. In 2008, when Maria Monsivais felt a marble sized lump in her breast, she made an appointment at Harris Health Squatty Lyons Health Center where she was then referred to Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital for a biopsy. She received the news she had stage 4 breast cancer and it was terminal. Despite the prognosis, Monsivias has beaten the odds.

Her advice to others who have cancer, “Don’t give up, always have faith,” she says. “Having stage 4 cancer is hard, if I can do it, you can do it. I’ve talked to so many people with different cancers while getting infusions and I try to encourage them.”

After finding a lump while doing a self-exam, Le Ngoc Thien received the news she had stage 3 breast cancer. She sought care at Harris Health Smith Clinic.

“The treatment I received at Smith Clinic is 10 out of 10. Everyone was so nice and provided great support during my treatment,” she says.

Her advice to those diagnosed with cancer is, “trust the doctors, their directions, advice and try hard to fight for yourself.”

La Shauna McKinney was diagnosed with stage 2 triple negative breast cancer in October 2020. She received treatment, but unfortunately, in March 2025, it came back positive for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS).

McKinney stresses the importance of rest, positivity, seeking help when needed and following your doctors’ orders.

“Cancer is not the end of life,” she says. “God has the final say. When you are going through a cancer journey, stay calm. While I went through a dark valley, today is a brighter day.”

In 2007, Araguz went to Harris Health Strawberry Health Center for a primary care visit where a lump was discovered. She was eventually diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer.

“I’ve received excellent care,” she says. “I thank God and my doctor, Jenny Chang and nurse Liz Michaels who have cared for me during this time and have helped me overcome this sickness.”

During her cancer journey, she learned to love herself and be more empathetic.

In 2018, Isabella Cruz felt a lump while doing a self-breast exam. After a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy she learned she had stage 3 breast cancer. Cruz began care at Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital where she started her treatment.

Emelda Cartagena’s well-ordered life was shaken when she received a life-altering diagnosis: breast cancer. Her doctor at Harris Health told her she had stage 0—a super small spot—that still required surgery.

She went into recovery, but in 2017 she received an abnormal mammogram in the same place. Again, it was stage 0. She underwent a second surgery, but instead of cancer, the doctors found a lot of calcifications. She trusted the Lord and to date, all her mammograms have been clear.

Her advice to those who have been diagnosed with cancer is to be positive and have faith.
