Our volunteers are shining stars, and we are forever grateful for them.

Sherry has been volunteering at Sterling Oaks since right after we opened. She helps with the monthly Country Store, as well as spreading love and friendship to all she comes in contact with.
But most importantly, she brings Communion and fellowship to the residents and staff every Tuesday morning. For many, this is the only opportunity they have to receive Communion.

Working hard in therapy! Sterling Oaks provides Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapy. Each therapy session is person centered, everyone undergoes an evaluation for each needed therapy. Our goal is to get each resident back to their baseline, and help them maintain what skills they have.
We have a Restorative Department, that focuses on maintaining skills after therapy.

Volunteering at Sterling Oaks at Sterling Oaks has been a great blessing in my life. Having the opportunity to lead a Bible study and be a part of the lives of the people there is amazing. I am forever grateful for the time I get to spend with the residents. The staff is warm and welcoming and truly care for the residents in that live there. This opportunity has changed my life forever. Thank you for allowing me to serve in this community. I am blessed beyond measure !

This is from Donna. It is a joy and privilege to be able to meet with our precious group. They have taught me how to live a Faith filled life in the twilight years. Donna

Thank you Carol & Makena Lei, we appreciate you and your time! Our volunteers are priceless.

What a joy it is for Makena Lei and I to volunteer our time at Sterling Oaks Rehabilitation and other facilities here in Katy. It is truly a privilege to serve our community! Each step we take is in honor of my mother who lost her battle to Alzheimer’s disease in May 2023. As mom’s advocate and caregiver on her 5+ year journey, I saw first-hand the good, the bad, and the ugly of this horrid disease. I’ve witnessed the challenges and loneliness of residents living in assisted living and memory care and can attest that the struggle is real. Makena Lei and I are a certified therapy dog team with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs and genuinely give from our hearts offering smiles and joy to all wherever we go. Off duty we enjoy training and competing in AKC sports.

This morning in small group we group we reminisced over games that are long gone. Everyone had an interesting story of their favorites. The discussion after went to Grandchild, their favorite topic.
Small Group is usually 11 people or less. It’s a more intimate setting, where residents aren’t overwhelmed with large groups or events. These discussions have a variety of topics.
Some of their favorites are using Google Earth to look up where they have lived, food and cultures when they were younger, music from their era, and grandchildren.

Thank you to Judy and Stetson. We appreciate you and your time! We have the best volunteers !
Time is a special gift and I am so blessed to spend time sharing my best friend visiting all the loving residents at Sterling Oaks. Stetson started his therapy as a 4-month old puppy before he had any training. I laughingly say “he had his internship before he received his education”. I have been an AAT volunteer since 1991 with 3 schnauzers and have volunteered with Stetson for 6 years. God has richly blessed me with time, this special dog and all the wonderful people we visit and serve.

Wednesday and Sunday at 9:30 am are Rosary and Communion. Mass is held Bi-monthly, the next one being in May. They have provided prayer, and anointing of the sick when called upon, and so much more. Brittany has helped numerous residents over the years. When we asked our residents about her, the same thing was answered over and over. She is kind, thoughtful, and empathetic. This is not an easy job, but she makes it look like a breeze!
Thank you Brittany, for being our Social Worker, as well as a friend!

As Women’s History Month comes to a close; we would like to recognize one of our residents. She was born and raised in Houston’s 5th Ward. This is an area of town that is rich in history and steeped in pride.
Our resident recalled going to Jensen Dr. to the Peanut Plant, Mrs. Bairds Bakery, and attending Wheatley High School. She saw movies at the original Roxy Theater. When the construction of Interstate 10 was needing her parents land, they were bought out for progress. She remembers growing up very poor, but to her she was rich. She had her family around her. 5th Ward boasts 5 churches over 100 years old, our resident was baptized in one of these very churches. Some famous people raised in 5th Ward were, Barbara Jordan, George Forman, Carl Crawford, and Alfred C. Finn.
