What I Wanted to Be

You’ll always find me asking your kids what they want to be when they grow up. I knew early on in 4th grade that I wanted to be a pediatrician. I don’t know particularly why. I don’t even remember my own pediatrician or going for well checks. I just remember going frequently for pink eye or sore throats. I remember the amoxicillin and my dad crushing bitter Tylenol tabs for me to take. (Did they not have the yummy cherry children’s syrups back then?) I just imagined how I would have my own clinic and would draw out floor plans. My cousin recalled that I even had a basketball court in my plans. Sorry guys, no basketball ball courts in the blueprints for Wishing Well right now.

I don’t even remember telling my 4th grade teacher that I wanted to be a pediatrician. Apparently she remembered. When I went to visit her as a graduating senior, she pulled out of her classroom closet a brown grocery bag of a children’s series called Serendipity Books that she used to read to us. She handed them to me and said they were for the children’s clinic she knew I’d have one day.

While I still kept with my goal of becoming a pediatrician throughout college and medical school, I lost sight of having my own clinic. Life and learning was difficult. Then marriage and kids shifted priorities. Then life got a little easier...and that childhood dream resurfaced. Many days and nights were spent dreaming again what I would call my clinic and deciding on the theme. Then I remembered those Serendipity Books I had tucked away on my kids’ bookshelves! That’s what you will see when you walk into Wishing Well Children’s Clinic--a little snippet of the world I saw when I was 10 years old.
