Meet Alyssa Runyan, an MS in athletic training alumna from Moorestown, N.J. She worked this year's Super Bowl as a seasonal athletic trainer for the Kansas City Chiefs.
However, Runyan shares a history with the Philadelphia Eagles. She did a rotation with the Eagles during their preseason training camp in 2023, and her father, Jon Runyan, played for the Birds from 2000-2008.
Growing up, were you a “bleed green” Eagles fan?
• Yes, I was definitely a little girl whose first word I learned to spell was “E-A-G-L-E-S.”
What made you want to become an athletic trainer?
• Growing up in a sports family, I’m fortunate to have always known how athletic trainers help in athletes’ performance, recovery and day-to-day well-being. At Moorestown Friends School, I also felt lucky to have had our athletic trainer, Kevin Cauley. I didn’t deal with many injuries while playing soccer and basketball, but he was always someone we could rely on to keep student-athletes safe during sporting events.
How did a Jefferson degree prepare you for your career?
• Jefferson set me up with a strong, foundational education. This, coupled with an array of outstanding clinical experiences and preceptors, has allowed me to seamlessly apply my knowledge from Jefferson to my role now with the Chiefs. The University did a great job aligning my goals as an athletic trainer with my clinical experiences. I believe that played a major role and set me up for success in my practice as an athletic trainer.
You did a rotation with the Eagles during their preseason training camp in 2023. Do you still have former mentors or colleagues with the team? Has there been any fun back-and-forth with them over meeting up in the Super Bowl?
• I had a great time while working with the Eagles. I’m sure they’re just as busy as us preparing for the trip to New Orleans, so no banter yet. However, everybody on staff I worked with is still with the Eagles, and I’m looking forward to seeing them again this weekend!
