Trust me…I tried contacting the school district about this because I think it’s dumb and understanding the height and weight of kids at a set point in time does not give an accurate representation of their health needs. What about those kids that aren’t getting enough to eat? What about those kids that are starving themselves to be thin? What about those kids that are humiliated to get weighed at school? This project is simply teaching kids that their health is based on the size of their body or other bodies and that is what they will learn from it all. I want kids to realize that there are several factors that contribute to your health and many of those we have zero control over. So.. please do better and provide programs that can teach health regardless of the size of somebody’s body.

Note on protein: Tweens and teens do need more protein for growth, especially if they are more active teens.

I always offer and try to include protein and fat with each meal/snack. That can be as simple as some chocolate milk, a string cheese, or a beef stick. It’s so much easier to “add”, than to restrict foods. Adding protein and fat with the carbs they need will naturally create more balance in their overall nourishing diet.

Remember though that the body is very efficient and it’s amazing how it’s designed to make up for our imperfect eating habits..especially in teens.
