When an antibiotic is needed, how you take it matters.

Here’s how you can help keep these life-saving medicines working:
- Take them exactly as your healthcare provider prescribes. Do not skip doses or stop early.
- Never share your antibiotics or keep them “just in case” someone later gets sick.
- Ask questions! “Why this antibiotic?” “How long?” “What side effects should I watch for?”

🛑 Antibiotics aren’t always the answer.

During U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week, we’re reminding everyone: if you’ve got a cold or flu, those are caused by viruses. Antibiotics only fight bacteria.

Before asking for an antibiotic, ask:
➡ “Is this illness caused by a virus or a bacteria?”

Taking an antibiotic when it’s not needed won’t help you feel better and it can help resistant germs get stronger.
