Thomas Pouliot can still hear the loud "pop" as his ACL and meniscus tore after a wrong step on the lacrosse field. But after surgery performed by our sports medicine orthopaedics team, perseverance and hard work, the Keene State College graduate was able to return to the sport he loves.

Looking back, Pouliot's injury taught him the power of mental toughness and helped him appreciate the little things.

“It’s an honor to be able to get up every day and walk,” he said.

What happens when a top-level college athlete almost has their entire sports career taken away in a single moment?

At 20 years old, that's what Thomas Pouliot experienced when one wrong step on the lacrosse field tore his ACL and meniscus. Now 23, the Keene State College graduate has recovered, thanks to his care from our sports medicine team.

Neal Goldenberg, MD, MA, our director of sports medicine, not only gave Pouliot a full knee reconstruction that got him back on the field, but Goldenberg also showed him the importance of hard work, perseverance and mental toughness.

“He never once told me it was impossible,” Pouliot said of returning to lacrosse. “I was really able to see light at the end of the tunnel.”

Jen and Dan Clayman of Rindge recently presented us with a $6,000 donation, in memory of their daughter, Emberly Rose Clayman.

Emberly was stillborn at 39 weeks gestational age at another New Hampshire hospital. Jen would go on to have another baby, Anthony, who was delivered under our care.

Moved by the compassion shown by our staff, the Claymans hosted a charity concert over the summer to raise money for us, through their organization Emberly’s Embrace. The donation will be used in several ways to help families bringing home new babies or who are grieving pregnancy loss, stillbirth and infant death.

Justin Lyons, MSN, RN, CEN, TCRN, is the nurse manager for our Emergency Department. He's worked here for almost a decade, working in his current role for about two years.

Lyons said his passion for healthcare started at a young age and has continued throughout his adulthood.

"As a kid I had to go on tow calls, my father was a tow-truck operator at the time, and was exposed to a lot of emergency scenes. That really got me wanting to pursue something that was adrenaline-based ... and now here [I am] in healthcare working in nursing."
