🔥 If you are an athlete experiencing soreness and inflammation, is your first instinct to reach for NSAIDS (non steroidal anti-inflammatories) to ease the pain and recover? 🔥

💡 Research shows that 60% of runners used NSAIDS during training and recovery. Unfortunately, this medication can mask signs of injury and hinder performance.

Soreness is normal, but it can cause inflammation. Muscle soreness associated with exercise—known as delayed onset muscle soreness—is a result of inflammation from muscle metabolism. 💪

The by-product of soreness from a strenuous workout is the tearing of microscopic holes in our muscles. After the workout, your body will begin to rebuild and strengthen its muscles. 😮 The immune system responds to these micro tears by flooding the overworked area with inflammatory cells.

🚨 Some evidence also suggests that while ibuprofen might help to ease aches and pains, it could also interfere with your body's normal routine of run/heal/repeat. 🚨

For one thing, the drug may hamper your kidneys' ability to clear out the by-products of your body's healing process, potentially leading to a buildup of oxidative stress. It could also erase some of the training benefits that happen as a result of going through the natural adaptive process.

🪴 If you need help managing soreness naturally as you rise to meet your health goals, ask our office how we can help!

Do you feel stuck thinking exclusively about setbacks and unpleasant outcomes? 🤔💭

As humans, we tend to be impacted much more by negative events than by positive ones. This negativity bias can influence how we feel, think, and act. It creates undesirable effects on our psychological state, which can then cause physical illness. 🫤

To make matters worse, negativity bias is reinforced in everyday life: through the news, complaintive coworkers or friends, etc. Escaping a negative mindset can feel like a never ending labyrinth.

🏔️ How do we overcome our natural tendency to gravitate toward stress? How can we make progress toward living fulfilling, positive lives?

☀️ Check up on yourself throughout the day, and challenge any negative self talk.
☀️ Practice mindfulness through intentional breathing, meditation, or journaling.
☀️ Practice cognitive restructuring by re-framing an
event or experience in a more positive way.
☀️ Savor the good moments to restore balance

By managing our negative emotions, reducing stress, and focusing on potential positives, we allow our bodies to stay healthy physically. 🏃‍♀️Removing the consequences of negativity bias helps us maintain hormonal balance, reduce our risk of anxiety and depression, and focus on making changes that allow us to live in optimal health.

If you are dealing with overwhelming negative thoughts that prevent you from living life to its fullest, call our office to learn about our wellness program!
