🐾 Meet Coal (2 of 2)
Personality: Outgoing, affectionate, and full of charm
Favorite Things: Being held, getting attention, and turning anything into a toy
Training Needs: Just the usual kitten basics — he’s already a superstar in the making!
Coal was brought to the shelter with his brother Oliver after they were found dumped in a tote behind a gas station. Despite that rough start, Coal hasn’t let it dim his spirit one bit. He’s friendly, vocal, and absolutely lives for love and attention — and he’s not shy about asking for it!
As soon as you pick him up, he starts purring like a motorboat, completely content and happy to be in your arms. He’s quickly become a staff favorite — it’s nearly impossible to say no to that sweet face and loving personality. Coal is playful, curious, and sees every object as either a toy or a treat until proven otherwise.
With his confident, affectionate nature, Coal would thrive in just about any household. He’s the kind of kitten who makes himself at home wherever he goes.
Why You’ll Love Him:
• Super affectionate and people-oriented
• Playful, curious, and full of kitten energy
• Has the fluffy look of a Maine C**n mix (though we can’t say for sure!)

🐾 Meet Oliver (1 of 2)
Personality: Shy, gentle, and quietly curious
Favorite Things: Jingle balls, fast-moving toys, and playing with his brother
Training Needs: Building confidence and learning to trust new people
Oliver was brought to the shelter with his brother Coal after they were found dumped in a tote behind a gas station. Despite such a rough start, Oliver is doing his best to adjust. He’s a little more reserved than his brother, but he doesn’t mind being picked up or handled — he just needs you to go slow and give him time to feel safe.
He absolutely loves playing with toys (especially anything that jingles or zips across the floor!) and is happiest when he’s romping around with Coal. With patience and love, we believe Oliver will blossom into a friendly, affectionate companion — he just needs someone willing to give him that chance.
Why You’ll Love Him:
• Playful and sweet once he warms up
• Gets along great with other kittens
• Has the soft, fluffy look of a Maine C**n mix (though we can’t say for sure!)
💙 Shy kittens deserve homes too. Could yours be the one Oliver’s been waiting for?

🐾 Meet Sawyer
Personality: Curious, playful, and full of hound charm
Favorite Things: Sniffing every corner, tasty treats, and squeaky toys (even if he’s not sure what to do with them yet!)
Training Needs: Learning boundaries with other dogs and adjusting to indoor life
Sawyer was brought in by an Animal Control Officer after being found as a stray. He’s a little nervous in his kennel, but once he’s in the playpen, he lights up — nose to the ground, tail in the air, and ready to explore every inch like the true hound he is.
He absolutely loves treats and is intrigued by squeaky toys, though he’s still figuring out how to play. Sawyer enjoys the company of other dogs and loves to play, sometimes a bit too enthusiastically. He’s not aggressive at all — just needs help learning when the other dog is ready for a break. With training and consistency, he’ll get there!
It seems Sawyer has spent most (if not all) of his life outdoors, but we believe with love, patience, and structure, he’ll make a wonderful indoor/outdoor companion. He’s a sweet, lovable boy who just needs someone to give him a chance.
Why You’ll Love Him:
• Classic hound personality — curious, food-motivated, and fun
• Gets along with other dogs
• Ready to learn and thrive in a loving home
💙 Older dogs deserve homes too. Could yours be the one Sawyer’s been waiting for?

🐾 URGENT RESCUE NEEDED – Meet Shaila
Personality: Sweet, resilient, and in need of a safe place
Status: Moderately pregnant – RESCUE ONLY
Why She Needs Out: The shelter is no place for a mama-to-be
Shaila was brought in by Animal Control as a stray and initially treated for facial lacerations and swelling. Thanks to our shelter’s treatment protocol, she’s healed well—but now she’s facing a new challenge: she’s moderately pregnant and due soon.
Because of this, Shaila is not available for adoption and is rescue-only. We don’t know exactly how far along she is or how many puppies she’s carrying due to budget limitations, but we believe she’s getting close. The shelter is a stressful place for any dog, but especially for a pregnant mama. She urgently needs out so she can give birth in a calm, safe environment.
While we do not dog-test pregnant dogs, Shaila has shown herself to be friendly with both people and other dogs. She’s a sweet girl who deserves a chance to raise her last litter in peace and comfort—not in a noisy kennel.
Why She Needs You:
• Pregnant and due soon
• Recently recovered from facial injuries
• Friendly and gentle—just needs a safe place to land
📋 SHAILA’S PROFILE
• 🐶 Name: SHAILA
• 🆔 ID: 59743247

Please email dcanimals@duplinnc.gov ASAP if you can help Shaila.

🐾 URGENT RESCUE NEEDED – Meet Lucy
Personality: Gentle, friendly, and in need of a safe space
Status: Heavily pregnant – RESCUE ONLY
Why She Needs Out: The shelter is no place for a mama about to give birth
Lucy was brought in by Animal Control as a stray, and she is very pregnant—likely due to give birth any day now. Because of this, she is not available for adoption and is rescue-only.
We don’t know exactly how far along she is or how many puppies she’s carrying due to budget limitations, but based on her behavior and recent discharge, we believe she’s extremely close to delivering. The shelter is a stressful environment for any dog, but especially for a pregnant or nursing mama. Lucy urgently needs out so she can have her puppies in a calm, safe space.
While we do not dog-test heavily pregnant dogs, Lucy has shown herself to be friendly with both people and other dogs. She deserves a chance to raise her last litter in peace and comfort—not behind kennel bars.
Why She Needs You:
• Heavily pregnant and due any day
• Shelter stress could put her and her puppies at risk
• Sweet and social—just needs a safe place to land

🐾 Meet Domino
Personality: Super sweet, affectionate, and easygoing
Favorite Things: Head scratches, treats, and being loved on
Training Needs: Learning how to play—he’s more into cuddles than toys!
Domino was originally brought in by Animal Control as a “feral cat,” but he quickly proved he’s anything but! He’s easily one of the friendliest cats on our adoption floor—gentle, affectionate, and always ready for attention.
Though he started out as an outdoor cat, Domino is so loving and people-oriented that we’re confident he’d do well as either an indoor or indoor/outdoor companion. He’s not quite sure what to do with toys just yet, but he’s open to learning. What he does know is that he loves treats and head scratches more than anything!
Domino is a young adult with a calm, lovable nature—he’s just waiting for someone to give him the home he deserves. Older cats need love too!
Why You’ll Love Him:
• Exceptionally friendly and affectionate
• Low-maintenance and easy to love
• Great candidate for indoor or indoor/outdoor living

🐾 Meet Blue
Personality: Shy at first, but sweet and affectionate once he trusts you
Favorite Things: Gentle pets, soft voices, and being the center of your attention
Training Needs: Confidence-building and learning how to play like a kitten
Blue was found meowing under someone’s shed and brought to the shelter by a kind member of the public. When he first arrived, he was what we lovingly call “spicy”—hissing, spitting, and not too sure about people. But Blue has come a long way since then.
He’s still a little jumpy with quick movements, but once he feels safe, he turns into a typical kitten who just wants love, attention, and lots of pets. In fact, he’ll let you know (loudly!) when you stop petting him before he’s ready. He’s still figuring out toys—especially ones his size or bigger—but he’s willing to learn if you’re willing to teach.
Blue is not quite 8 weeks old yet, but he can be adopted now as long as the adopter understands they’ll need to take him to the vet for vaccinations once he turns 9 weeks. If he’s still with us at that time, we’ll take care of it here.
Why You’ll Love Him:
• A sweet, resilient kitten who’s learning to trust
• Affectionate once he warms up
• Deserving of a patient, loving home
📋 BLUE’S PROFILE

🐾 Meet Micah
Personality: Gentle, shy, and sweet-natured
Favorite Things: Calm dogs, quiet companionship, and treats
Training Needs: Building confidence and learning how to be a puppy
Micah arrived at the shelter with his sister Mecca after a kind stranger found them wandering along the roadside. They were underweight, flea-covered, and scared—but with time and care, Micah is slowly learning to trust and is ready for a second chance.
Though not a bonded pair, Micah and Mecca are currently kenneled together and get along wonderfully. Micah is the more reserved of the two—he’s shy around people at first, but once he feels safe, he’ll lean into you for affection and soak up every bit of love you offer. He’s especially comforted by other dogs and would do best in a home with a calm, friendly canine companion.
Micah is submissive and just wants to be friends—whether with humans or dogs—it just takes him a little longer to warm up. He’s still figuring out toys (he loves the squeaky sound but isn’t sure what to do next), and he absolutely loves treats. What he needs most is a patient, loving home where he can finally learn how to be a puppy.
Why You’ll Love Him:
• Gentle and affectionate once he feels safe
• Gets along well with other dogs
• Would thrive in a calm, supportive home

🐾 Meet Mecca
Personality: Friendly, balanced, and eager to connect
Favorite Things: Treats, squeaky toys (even if she’s not sure what to do with them yet), and dogs who match her vibe
Training Needs: Learning how to be a puppy—she’s ready for it!
Mecca arrived at the shelter with her brother Micah after a kind stranger found them wandering along the roadside. They were skinny, flea-covered, and scared—but with time, care, and love, Mecca has come out of her shell and is now ready for a second chance.
Though not a bonded pair, Mecca and Micah are currently kenneled together and get along great. Mecca is definitely the more outgoing of the two—she enjoys people and other dogs, especially those who match her energy. She’s like Goldilocks: not too hyper, not too mellow—just right. And that’s exactly the kind of companion she’s looking for, whether human or canine.
She’s still figuring out toys (she loves the squeaky sound but isn’t quite sure what to do next), but she’s open to learning. What she does know is that she loves treats—and lots of them! All she needs now is a loving home where she can finally learn how to just be a puppy.

• Gets along well with other dogs

As of right now, with our tiny building, they are only required the minimum state law requirement of 72 hours. However, we give them 125 hours total to try to find a better alternative. The building fills faster than people can get them out. Euthanasia is a sad truth here but with all the help, the village has performed miracle after miracle for these animals to have a second chance. For the ones we were unable to help, we wear on our sleeves. Help us make a change!!
