FOR CRYING OUT LOUD
A recent Danish study shows that infantile colic can be successfully managed through chiropractic manipulation. The study compared two groups of infants, aged 2 to 10 weeks. One group received daily doses of dimethicone (commonly used in medical treatment of colic); the other received 3-5 daily treatments involving light pressure with the fingertips to manipulate vertebral segments in the spine or pelvis. After 4-7 days of treatment, the number of hours of crying was reduced by one hour in the dimethicone group, as compared to a reduction of 2.4 hours in the manipulated group. By days 8-11, the disparity became even greater (2.7 less hours of crying in the manipulated group versus 1 hour in the dimethicone group).
