So if your doctor has prescribed a GLP-1 medicine (eg, Ozempic, or similar) for you, great! I want you to be aware of possible side effects so you can contact that doctor in the event you have an adverse experience. These medicines work by slowing the muscles of digestion (stomach and intestines) so that you feel full longer, eat less, and voila! lose weight. All good. Bear in mind the following:
- some people (the most common report) is that this is not just fullness, but "nausea". Sometimes it becomes less noticeable after a few doses. Also, since these meds are injected once a week, the nausea wears off over a few days.
- slow stomach emptying can lead to reflux, or a feeling of burning in the upper chest or even a sour taste in the mouth. Contact you doctor if you experience this.
- in some people the intestines slow so much that it leads to constipation, or rarely to a paralysis of the intestines. Again, contact your doctor.
- rarely, another organ involved in digestion, the pancreas, becomes inflamed, called pancreatitis.
Hence, if you have pain that is severe or worsening, please visit an urgent care center ASAP. Some of these problems need quick attention.
FINALLY my biggest objection: when you achieve your goal weight and stop taking them, your appetite comes back and voila, you put the weight back on again. This is my biggest objection to these medicines.
I have a better way, it can be detailed and tailored to your needs. Yes, it involves changes. But it's a healthier long term strategy.
I am doing some of these things myself. They work. They keep the weight off. They are not difficult. Generally, no side effects and the ones that do appear, are minor and easily managed. Vegetables are involved. Some mild/light exercise is involved. If you want to learn more, you know where to find, me, right?
