“New Year, New You” doesn’t work for health — and here’s why (from a Naturopathic and Functional medicine perspective):
Every January, we’re told to reset, detox, and become a completely different person by Monday.

Spoiler alert: your biology did not get that memo.
From a naturopathic lens, health doesn’t improve through extremes or shame-based motivation. It improves when we work with your body — not against it.

Here’s why the “New Year, New You” approach usually fails:
• The biggest reason, your life didn’t get any less busy just because it’s January.
• Goals are too big and too vague to be attainable. Trying to change everything at once overwhelms the nervous system, leading to more stress, more cortisol, and the cycle continues
• Symptoms aren’t yet understood. Very often, marketing and healthcare tell us our symptoms are caused by one thing: hormone imbalances, genetics, family history, dehydration, your diet, or lack of exercise. This is a flawed approach as it ignores the fact that it is likely a combination of factors and an undetermined root cause.
• Timelines don’t match how the body actually heals- different cells and processes in the body turn over and heal at different rates
• Motivation and willpower are expected to override stress, poor sleep, and a busy schedule

A few important reframes:
✨ Your body isn’t broken — it’s communicating.
Your signs and symptoms (poor digestion, inability to lose weight, hormone issues, pain, and brain fog) are not random — they’re meaningful clues.

Understanding those clues requires:
• A thorough conversation about your medical history and day-to-day life
• Targeted labs with interpretation beyond “everything is normal, so you're fine.”
• An individualized plan that supports the body back into balance

🎯 Small, attainable goals create real momentum.
Hard resets, extreme diets, and overexercising raise stress hormones, which can worsen digestion, blood sugar, hormones, and inflammation. The body responds best to nourishing changes it can adapt to, not restriction. One consistent supportive habit will outperform a perfect plan you can’t maintain.
⏳ Health is not a 30-day challenge.
Your gut, immune system, metabolism, and hormones heal through steady, supported progress — not urgency.
🧬 There is no one-size-fits-all plan.
What works for someone else’s body, history, and biochemistry may be the wrong approach for yours.

If “New Year, New You” has never worked for you… You’re not broken.

You just haven’t been supported the right way. Health isn’t about becoming someone new — it’s about understanding your body and helping it do what it’s designed to do. Heal and be resilient. Same you. Better supported. 🌱
✨ We’re an established integrative medicine practice, new to the area, and currently welcoming new patients.
Our approach starts with listening — understanding your symptoms, your labs, and your real life — so we can build a plan that’s realistic, personalized, and sustainable.
If you’re ready for:
✔️ Thoughtful, unhurried conversations
✔️ Targeted labs with meaningful interpretation
✔️ A plan built for your biology and capacity

Now offering reduced-rate therapy for all ages! Contact us for more information!

Becky Buck is a Practicum Counselor Trainee from the University of Southern Maine, where she is pursuing her MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Her work is grounded in trauma-informed, client-centered care, and she approaches counseling as a shared journey, walking alongside clients as they gently explore the connections between thoughts, feelings, needs, and lived experience.

An aspiring Expressive Arts Therapist, Becky integrates mindfulness-based stress reduction, drama therapy, and integrative spirituality into her work. She is deeply interested in interconnectedness and meaning-making, and in how relationships, environments, and larger systems shape mental health and wellness over time.

Born and raised in Midcoast Maine, Becky has returned to her hometown and small family farm, where she is raising her four children. She is a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community and values creating affirming, inclusive spaces where people feel safe to be fully themselves. Becky brings particular care to working with those navigating identity, belonging, motherhood, and life transitions.

At the heart of Becky’s work is a belief that healing unfolds when people feel held, supported, and empowered to find their own path. She honors each client’s autonomy and inner wisdom, offering a steady, compassionate presence along the way.

Symptoms of mental illness and Lyme overlap. Our partitioners are here to help identify the root cause of your child’s symptoms!

Adults and children exhibit cognitive and neurological symptoms of tick borne diseases (TBDs), but the main difference is that children do not possess the ability to articulate and communicate their symptoms to caregivers. It is already difficult enough to diagnose TBDs to begin with, and is often missed in children.

Read more about symptoms of TBDs in children to help keep a careful eye on the little ones in your life.

Headwaters Wellness welcomes Judy Peters’s social work practice to the center. Please check out her bio for more information about her services!

About me:
I have been a practicing social worker in Southern Maine and New Hampshire for seventeen years with broad experience in both medical and educational settings. I have both undergraduate and graduate degrees in social work and am a recipient of an Advanced Certificate in Clinical Practice with Children, Youth and Families at Boston College. Currently, I am completing a doctoral degree at Simmons University with a research focus on understanding increases in anxiety among elementary aged children since COVID-19. I have most recently been employed as a licensed clinical social worker serving school districts throughout Southern Maine specializing in supporting K-12 children and families in both general and special education settings including through the COVID-19 pandemic. I have been honored to mentor multiple graduate student interns and currently provide clinical supervision for a team of K-12 school-based social workers. I have extensive experience building treatment plans that address goals to support children for a broad array of social emotional needs including those related to: autism, anxiety disorders, depression, ADHD, other neuro developmental disorders and additional social, structural, and health challenges.

About my practice:
I am passionate about working with elementary aged children and their families. I am starting a part-time practice that focuses on supporting children aged 5-11. I take an in-person, multi-modal, parent centered, strengths and skill-based approach using evidenced-based practices and time-tested techniques to address areas such as: emotional processing and regulation, calming strategies, positive thinking, self-esteem and social skills. If you feel I may be a good fit for your child and family’s needs, please give me a call for a free 15-minute consultation.

Insurance and fees:
I am currently not in-network with any insurance providers. My fee is $130 per 50-minute session. I will provide a detailed statement for insurance reimbursement purposes. 207-502-3405
