COVID vaccine for ages 6mo-5yr (Moderna) is now in stock. Vaccination appointments will be available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Appointments are required. To schedule, please book online at www.localrootshealthcare.com/contact. If you are scheduling for multiple children, please book an appointment for each child so that I can manage supply and reordering needs.
The Moderna vaccine for children aged 6mo-5years is a TWO dose series (1/4th of the adult dose), spaced 28 days apart. We are not planning on stocking the Pfizer vaccine for this youngest aged group because we believe the Moderna vaccine has a few critical clinical advantages over the Pfizer vaccine for this same age group:
1) Pfizer is a 3 dose series that takes 11 weeks to complete compared to Moderna’s two dose series spaced 28 days apart.
2) TWO doses of the Pfizer vaccine was not shown to illicit an effective antibody response and the FDA and CDC did not approve the Pfizer vaccine for less than 3 doses for this important reason.
3) We think 13 weeks for full protection is too long when there is an equally safe and effective vaccine that provides full protection in 6 weeks.
4) We want to minimize the chance of a child not receiving the full series, and therefore not having antibody protection against COVID.
5) One few shot is less traumatic for your young child.
6) This not to say that the Pfizer vaccine is inferior, it is a great vaccine, and will be widely available elsewhere such as the York County Vaccination Center in Sanford
Pfizer COVID vaccine for kids aged 5-11 is back in stock for those who need 1st, 2nd or booster doses. CDC recommends that children aged 5-11 receive a booster dose 5 months after their 2nd shot.
Adult Moderna vaccine is still in stock too.
Lastly, if you don’t think children should be vaccinated against COVID, this is not the venue for sharing your opinion. Anti-vaccination posts will be removed, and you will be restricted from this page.
