Understanding the Difference: Service-Connected vs. Non-Service-Connected VA Disabilities
One of the most common questions I hear from Veterans, families, and even professionals in our field is:
“What’s the difference between a service-connected disability and a non-service-connected disability?”
As we continue striving to educate and empower our veteran community, I wanted to offer a clear explanation.
âś… Service-Connected Disability
A service-connected disability is directly linked to an injury, illness, or condition that was caused or aggravated by a Veteran’s active-duty military service. These disabilities are evaluated and rated by the VA, and compensation is based on the severity of the condition.
This type of benefit is designed as compensation for the impact that service-related conditions have on a veteran’s daily life, employability, and long-term health.
âś… Non-Service-Connected Disability
A non-service-connected disability is a medical condition not caused by military service. While these conditions do not qualify for service-connected compensation, veterans may still be eligible for needs-based assistance—such as the VA Aid & Attendance pension benefit—to help with in-home care and activities of daily living.
For many wartime veterans and their surviving spouses, this benefit can be life-changing and is often underutilized simply due to a lack of awareness.
At Veterans-First, our mission is to ensure no Veteran or Surviving Spouse goes without the care and benefits they have earned. Education is the first step.
If you or someone you know has questions about eligibility, navigating the VA, or understanding which benefit may apply to their situation, we're always here to help.
