Baseball is more than a game — it’s about community, courage, and connection.

On September 9, the Seattle Mariners honored Emerson, a Seattle Children’s cancer patient, as part of MLB’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Earlier this year, Emerson formed a special bond with Washington Husky Baseball player Julian Sanders through the Beads of Courage program. That bond came full circle when Emerson threw out the first pitch to Julian at T-Mobile Park. A moment of strength, joy, and community we’ll never forget.

If you decide to keep guns in the home, remember: teaching kids not to touch a firearm isn’t enough.

Children are naturally curious, and studies show that safety lessons alone don’t prevent accidents. What helps? Honest conversations + consistent safety rules:

➡️ Talk openly about fi****ms. Create space for questions and keep the dialogue ongoing.
➡️ Model safe behavior—never handle fi****ms casually or as a “joke.”
➡️ Combine conversations with action: store fi****ms unloaded, locked, and separate from ammunition.

Together, these steps help protect kids and teens from preventable injuries.

From cancer survivor to mountain climber

Spencer marked 25 years since his groundbreaking treatment at Seattle Children’s with an unforgettable journey—climbing Mount Kilimanjaro during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

His goal was to raise $7,956 (one dollar for every meter of the climb). Thanks to overwhelming support, he surpassed it!

We are so grateful to Spencer and everyone who joined him in supporting pediatric cancer research. 💛 Together, we’re creating a brighter future for kids.

When Alexis was just 2 months old, she began treatment at Seattle Children’s for Stage 4 cancer. Today, she’s 19, cancer-free and thriving.

Through our Cancer Survivor Program, kids, teens and young adults like Alexis receive personalized care and support long after treatment ends—helping them stay healthy well into adulthood.

“Today, I’m grappling with how to balance life as a cancer 'survivor' and a college student. Through my appointments and involvement with the Cancer Survivor Program, I have opportunities to share my story and connect with other people who understand situations like mine. My survivorship appointments and the connections I have with other patients have sparked my passion to be there for kids who may not know how to communicate their emotions in positive or productive ways.”

Wondering how you can help the children in your life thrive at school, both academically and personally?

Social-emotional learning helps children develop the social and emotional skills they need to manage strong feelings, make friends, and solve problems. And you can help them develop these skills at home, just by showing them how you use these skills yourself.

With children going back to school, it is crucial parents and guardians support the mental and emotional well-being of youth as they continue to grow and learn. MHA recently hosted a webinar led by Mestisa Gass, program director for MHA of Hawaii, where she discussed the importance of social emotion...
