If your little one says “tar” for “car,” they’re likely using a common pattern called fronting. Instead of correcting:

❌ “No, say CAR.”
✅ “Yes! Car! The car is fast!”

Slow it down just a tiny bit and slightly emphasize the /k/ sound without turning it into a performance. They hear the correct version over and over - and that’s what helps their system mature. By asking them to produce a sound that is hard for them to say, they could become frustrated and shut down - which we don't want!

If they are still using an incorrect pattern after the age of 4, give us a call at Simply Spoken Therapy. We are here to help!

I know what you Googled last night.

“Is it normal for my 2 year old to not talk yet?”

And then you went down the rabbit hole.
Milestone charts. Reddit threads. That one article that made your stomach drop. 😵‍💫

First - take a breath.

At 2 years old, most toddlers are starting to:
• Use around 50+ words
• Combine 2 words together (“more milk,” “mommy up”)
• Be understood about half the time

But here’s the part Google doesn’t always say clearly:

Some kids need more time.
Some kids need more support.
And some kids are busy mastering other skills first.

Not talking much at 2 doesn’t automatically mean something is “wrong.”
But it does mean it’s okay to ask questions.

If your little one:
• Mostly points, grunts, or pulls you
• Gets frustrated when trying to communicate
• Isn’t combining words yet
• Isn’t imitating new words

That’s a good time to check in with a speech-language pathologist.

Early support isn’t scary.
It’s proactive.
It’s empowering.
It’s giving your child tools instead of waiting and worrying.

And if you’re in that late-night Google spiral right now?
You’re not dramatic.
You’re not overreacting.
You’re a parent who cares.

And that’s a pretty great place to start. 💛

If your child says “tar” for “car” or “doe” for “go,” you might be hearing something called fronting - a common speech pattern in young kids.

It’s often totally typical under age 4 and usually fades on its own. But if it sticks around or is making your child hard to understand, it might be time to take a closer look.

We’re breaking down what fronting is, when to watch it, and how we support kids (in fun, play-based ways 💛) in our latest blog.

Some toddlers are chatterboxes. Some are quiet observers plotting world domination from the couch cushions. Both can be normal.

But here’s an easy way to check in:

By 12 months – you’d hope to hear a few real words.
By 18 months – around 10–20 words.
By 24 months – closer to 50+ words and starting to combine words like “more milk” or “mommy go.”

If your 2 year old has fewer than 50 words or isn’t putting two words together by 2.5 that’s a gentle nudge to look a little closer.

Also ask yourself:

Do they understand what you say?

Do they point, wave, show you things, and try to get your attention?

Because communication is more than just words. We love a strong pointer.

Being a late talker doesn’t mean something is “wrong.” It just means your child might need a little extra support while their language grows.

And support at this age? It looks like play. It looks like connection. It looks like meeting your child right where they are.

If your gut is whispering, “Hmm…” trust it. Getting information is empowering. 💛

If your toddler says “ba!” while pointing to a ball, you don’t need a speech lecture. Just build it up naturally:

Child: “Ba!”
You: “Ball! Big ball! Bounce ball!”

You’re modeling slightly longer phrases without demanding they repeat you. No pressure. No drills. Just connection and exposure. That’s how language grows.

Valentine’s Day? Oh sure, it’s cute and all… but around here we’re not just celebrating romantic love.

We’re celebrating:
💘 first words
💘 spontaneous hugs
💘 dramatic sticker negotiations
💘 and that one kiddo who insists every animal says “moo” (iconic, honestly)

Love isn’t just candlelight and chocolates.
It’s high-fives after a tricky sound.
It’s “I DID IT!” shouted at full volume.
It’s friendships formed in the waiting room and parents cheering each other on.

Today we’re sending big, sparkly heart energy to our clients - past, present, and future. The toddlers, the big kids, the AAC rockstars, the shy whisperers, the chatty narrators… all of you.

You make our days louder, sillier, sweeter, and way more fun than any box of chocolates ever could...(But we will still take the chocolate)

If you’re looking for something FREE to do with the kids that gets everyone out of the house (and maybe burns a little energy 😅), come to the RecPlex Expo on Saturday, February 28th from 10–3.

We’ll be there and we genuinely love seeing our families out in the community. It’s so fun when the kids spot us like, “Hey! That’s my speech teacher!” 🥹 So please stop by and say hi.

We’re also sharing all of our summer groups and offerings for the first time 👀 If summer planning has been on your mental to-do list but you haven’t gotten to it yet… this is your sign.

Free event. Easy Saturday plan. Friendly faces.
We can’t wait to see you. 💛

Before letters make sense, kids need to hear and play with sounds.

Rhymes, syllables, stretching out words like /k/–/a/–/t/ - that’s the real foundation for reading.

And our very own Ms. Bailey is breaking down what phonological awareness is and how to build it through simple, everyday play (no flashcards required 🙌).
