👜✨ A little piece of Kenosha history… now in tote bag form!

During the remodel of our very first location on 7th Avenue, we discovered a fragile paper label tucked between the floorboards. It turned out to be an original Mayer Drug Co. “Hive Syrup” label from the early 1900s, a true pharmacy time capsule.

We were so charmed by it that we turned the design into this beautiful vintage-label tote bag, giving new life to something nearly lost to time.

So what was Hive Syrup?
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, “hive” referred to hives, congestion, and childhood respiratory issues. Hive Syrup was a common home remedy used for:
• Coughs
• Chest tightness
• Wheezing
• Irritable or “spasmodic” breathing in kids

Formulas varied by pharmacy, but they often included soothing botanicals — and sometimes stronger additions. This particular one notes 0.9% alcohol, which was completely normal for medicines of the era.

The original label even shows Mayer Drug Co.’s two Kenosha locations:
• 151 Milwaukee Ave
• 189 Howland Ave

It’s incredible to think this little slip of paper survived over 100 years, hidden under our feet — literally.

Now, it’s been reimagined into a tote that carries a story: a link between Kenosha’s pharmacy roots and the Modern Apothecary you know today. 💛

Today’s artifact: Red Seal Haarlem Oil Capsules, produced by the Virginia Chemical Company of St. Louis, Missouri.

💊 Each capsule contained sulfurated oil of turpentine, an ingredient that was once believed to cleanse the kidneys, bladder, and “purify the blood.” Haarlem Oil dates all the way back to 17th-century Holland, where it was originally marketed as a universal remedy for everything from joint pain to infections.

By the late 1800s and early 1900s, it had become a popular patent medicine in the U.S., often advertised as a “kidney and bladder tonic.” The turpentine component (yes, the same kind once used as a solvent and paint thinner) acted as a mild diuretic and antiseptic, but it also carried risks of irritation and toxicity.

🧴 Products like Haarlem Oil show the fascinating mix of folk medicine, chemistry, and early marketing that shaped pharmacy history. Before the FDA required proof of safety and efficacy, many of these tonics relied on persuasive labels rather than proven science.
