Integrated Living Services

Integrated Living Services In 1982 we opened the doors to our group home in Seatac, the Christine Minard Residence.

Integrated Living Services provides whole life services to people with disabilities so that they can thrive in the community and live a life at least as good as that of their non-disabled peers. ILS started out in 1967 as a parent cooperative pre-school for disabled children before public law guaranteed all children the right to a public education, without regard to disabling condition. These parents, realizing that residential options for their children were limited to institutional placement, worked to develop a group home for those same children. The group home was built to accommodate wheelchairs, which was unique at the time since people in wheelchairs were not allowed to live in group homes in Washington state. Prior to the opening of this group home, state statutes did not allow people in wheelchairs to live in group homes. ILS successfully lobbied for and played a pivotal role to make changes in these laws. We have been championing the rights of people with disabilities ever since. We opened up our Supported Living program in 1996 and now serve people throughout King County.

Friends of ILS- please share 😀 We are also currently hiring for LPN and Program Director Positions!

02/02/2021

Dear friends and colleagues,
I am writing to you today to inform you of some changes in the coming months here at ILS.
It is with heavy heart but great excitement for ILS’s future that I announce my retirement and resignation as CEO and executive director of the agency effective March 31, 2021. The board and I have placed our endless confidence in the abilities of Joseph Emmanuel, who has been selected as the next executive director. Emily Oyoo will assume the responsibilities of overseeing all program aspects. Both appointments begin April 1, 2021.
It is difficult to adequately express the tremendous privilege it has been to serve alongside you as dedicated professionals, as well as meeting, sharing time with, and learning from hundreds of staff and clients over the twenty-seven years since I was first selected as executive director of what was then the South King County Group Home Association. It was the esteemed John Mills, then board president (and the father of Laurie Mills), who appointed me and gave me my mission, which I still remember today: that I was to be its caretaker and grow it.
Those words have been my guiding influence, and I have tried to live up to them. We began with twelve staff, eight clients, and a single group home. We overcame many financial hardships and institutional growing pains and have emerged ever stronger. Today we have 230 employees and over 60 program participants and we are providing services wherever needed throughout King County. I am proud of what we have accomplished together.
Just as important are the personal relationships and friendships forged within the ILS community. We have diverse personnel, from many different countries, and each of you brings both an individual and a cultural story to tell. We are fortunate to be able to learn so much about one another and our places of origin. I can personally vouch for how this has enriched my life and understanding of our world. It is a rare opportunity for which I am deeply grateful, and I know this experience has enhanced the quality of our work and our empathy for others, including our clients.
Although I will be moving soon to Santa Fe, New Mexico, I will continue to support the agency in a support and advisory role for the foreseeable future and assist Joseph initially in steering the organization. The agency will be in good hands under Joseph’s oversight. He has been with ILS as a continuous presence since 1998 and has worked in all departments. His knowledge of the agency is deep and broad, and the board and I trust in his ability to lead.
We all know that 2020 has been an unusual and difficult year, and we don’t know what will happen by the time I depart in March 2021, but one thing is certain: ILS is as strong and impactful now as it has ever been. Whatever happens going forward, the organization has the collective skills, fortitude, leadership, and heart to face it and thrive. I will be joyfully watching—and cheering.
With love and respect,

Greg Miller
