⛓ Chain Reaction ⛓

Here is a kiddo I’ve been working with on his ankle stiffness.

đŸŽ„ As you can see in the first video, there is a much more controlled land but also more bend in the ankle, which therefore causes more bend in the knee = more force absorption.

đŸŽ„ In the second video, it’s a less smooth landing and you can see less bend in the ankle, which results in less bend at the knee = less force absorption.

⁉ So why does that matter?

Lack of movement down chain may create a problem up chain. Because his ankle can’t dorsiflex (bend) his knee can’t do what it’s supposed to. It can’t absorb force or load as well, which will in time weaken it and possibly predispose it to injury.

It’s the small things that matter, but to see the small things you gotta see the whole picture.

When I was watching the women’s NCAA basketball tournament this season, I remember seeing Stanford’s warm-up shirts say “Nike Soccer” on the back. Looking further into it I saw where it was to pay tribute to an athlete of theirs who was on the soccer team there at Stanford.

I don’t know the ins and outs of each of these girls situations, and all the factors that led to this, but I do know a lot about the pressures athletes face.

As a PT, I’ve worked with tons of athletes who are taken away from their sport for a while. I can see the pain in their eyes from missing time on the field, court, with teammates. Yes, the rehab part can be tough, but there is a huge psychological side to rehab. And should always be addressed because no one can physically be where they need to unless they’re mentally, emotionally, and spiritually well.

Even if someone doesn’t go through rehab, I remember the pressure, especially at the college level, to perform. Honestly though, I even see this pressure on young kids as well to perform dang near close to perfect. And through their sport, a lot of these athletes see their self worth. “If I’m not performing, I’m a failure.”

I get it. I love sports. I was there and I was my own worst critic. My dad hardly ever had to critique me bc I was already there. He just hit me the ball
anddd kept hitting me the ball.

Speaking to athletes and anyone else who can relate to this. You are more than your sport, or whatever is pressuring you. I’ve had to remind myself of this too lately, but finding your self worth through Jesus our Lord and Savior is all you need. Find your identity through Him. Sports (or job/career, family, friends, status) can be taken away. If that happened, who would you be then?

Hate what happened to these young girls, and I pray for their families. Please continue to pray for them đŸ™đŸ»

Parents, coaches, health professionals, or whoever that may come into contact with athletes, pick them up. Be their shoulder when they need it, and help them see their tremendous value they have through Him.

Pain when you run?

I’ve heard from several clients over the years that originally went to a different healthcare provider, say the pain they have when they run may have gotten a little better but never resolved.

My first question always is:
Well did they watch you run? Usually the answer is no. They were treated with some table stretches, maybe some clam shells, then can’t forget the foam roll, then called it a day.

**Disclaimer: I use stretches when needed and the foam roll can be a good recovery tool after loading, but treatment for these kind of issue takes a deeper look.**

And sometimes the issue doesn’t show itself initially.

These pics were taken at one of my races in 2019 when I was battling some hip issues. The first pic is at mile 2 and the second one at mile 3.

You can see the decreased hip angle in the second pic which looks like my knee is caving in. And there it is, that’s my issue. This leg was getting fatigued and mechanics started to fail.

For some it could be pain in the hip, others the knee, and others the ankle/foot.

Treatment is really about establishing good neuromuscular control through the chain, with the goal of not letting this pain show itself until later in the run and then eventually not at all.

Great illustrations by Onyx Physical Therapy + Performance

I realize the cash-based PT model is a different approach, but it’s a more effective one.

With this model, there is no need to have a high volume of patients in order to keep up with declining reimbursement rates. This allows for 1:1 attention and results in a higher quality of care. Which translates to fewer visits needed, and less costs.

When it comes to your sport, your activity, or your life, getting out of pain or returning to your prior level (or better đŸ”„đŸ’Ș), matters. Insurance companies don’t know that when it comes to PT. They want to pay only for what they think you need. They think when authorization is up, or you’re “good enough” it’s time for discharge. Well what if being “good enough” isn’t enough?
