When I was watching the womenâs NCAA basketball tournament this season, I remember seeing Stanfordâs warm-up shirts say âNike Soccerâ on the back. Looking further into it I saw where it was to pay tribute to an athlete of theirs who was on the soccer team there at Stanford.
I donât know the ins and outs of each of these girls situations, and all the factors that led to this, but I do know a lot about the pressures athletes face.
As a PT, Iâve worked with tons of athletes who are taken away from their sport for a while. I can see the pain in their eyes from missing time on the field, court, with teammates. Yes, the rehab part can be tough, but there is a huge psychological side to rehab. And should always be addressed because no one can physically be where they need to unless theyâre mentally, emotionally, and spiritually well.
Even if someone doesnât go through rehab, I remember the pressure, especially at the college level, to perform. Honestly though, I even see this pressure on young kids as well to perform dang near close to perfect. And through their sport, a lot of these athletes see their self worth. âIf Iâm not performing, Iâm a failure.â
I get it. I love sports. I was there and I was my own worst critic. My dad hardly ever had to critique me bc I was already there. He just hit me the ball⊠anddd kept hitting me the ball.
Speaking to athletes and anyone else who can relate to this. You are more than your sport, or whatever is pressuring you. Iâve had to remind myself of this too lately, but finding your self worth through Jesus our Lord and Savior is all you need. Find your identity through Him. Sports (or job/career, family, friends, status) can be taken away. If that happened, who would you be then?
Hate what happened to these young girls, and I pray for their families. Please continue to pray for them đđ»
Parents, coaches, health professionals, or whoever that may come into contact with athletes, pick them up. Be their shoulder when they need it, and help them see their tremendous value they have through Him.
