Peterson Health and Public Health Region 8 are hosting a vaccine clinic for first responders and community members involved with flood response or who need hepatitis A or tetanus vaccines. Vaccines are free.

Information about vaccines:

Why Hepatitis A Vaccine?
•Floodwaters can be contaminated with the virus and even tiny amounts are dangerous.
•Hepatitis A can cause weeks of illness (fever, fatigue, turning yellow and stomach pain).
•The vaccine works well and has few side effects.
•The vaccine is for anyone over the age of 19 who has not been vaccinated.

Why Tetanus Vaccine?
•Floods leave behind debris and sharp objects that can be contaminated with tetanus bacteria.
•Tetanus, or lockjaw, can make it hard to swallow and includes muscle spasms, seizures and headaches.
•The vaccine works well and lasts for 10 years.
•The vaccine is for anyone over 10 years of age who has not been vaccinated in more than 5 years.

In collaboration with DSHS, Peterson Health will be hosting a free Hepatitis A and Tetanus Vaccine clinic TOMORROW, July 18th 7:30am-1pm at City West Church. We invite first responders and volunteers directly involved with flood response.

Information about vaccines:
Hepatitis A
Why it matters in flood response:
• Floodwaters can be contaminated with raw sewage, which often carries the hepatitis A virus.
• Hepatitis A spreads through ingestion of even microscopic amounts of contaminated water or food, or from touching contaminated surfaces and then the mouth.
• Hepatitis A can cause weeks of illness with fever, fatigue, jaundice, and abdominal pain.
• The vaccine is highly effective and generally well tolerated.
Tetanus
Why it matters in flood response:
• Floods often leave behind debris, sharp objects, and wreckage which are perfect conditions for cuts and puncture wounds.
• Tetanus bacteria live in soil, dust, and manure; all common in flood-affected areas.
• Infection can happen through even small wounds that may go unnoticed.
Who should get vaccinated?
• Anyone exposed to flood water/mud
• Anyone vaccinated over 5 years ago
• Anyone that has not been vaccinated
