In the energy sector, I’ve seen boards sit in silence for what felt like hours. The tension was palpable. Everyone knew something needed to be said, but no one wanted to be the one to say it.

That’s when I learned the power of strategic silence. Sometimes, the most influential move is to not speak.
When you create space for others to fill the silence, you give them permission to be vulnerable, honest, and thoughtful. It’s not about being passive; it’s about being present.

Here’s a simple practice:
• In your next meeting, notice when the room goes quiet.
• Instead of rushing to fill it, count to 5 in your head.
• If someone speaks, listen fully. If no one does, ask: “What’s the one thing we’re not saying out loud?”
That question alone can shift the entire conversation.
