Flourish Foundation - Transform the Mind, Inspire Change We support personal growth in K-12 students and adults through self-awareness, and community service

RELEVANCE OF OUR WORK:

Although the 21st century has proven to be an incredible time of innovation and growth, humanity is beset by an unprecedented degree of violence, political corruption, environmental degradation, social injustice, and psychological disorders. It is our belief that at the root of this human caused suffering are the mental imbalances of hatred, greed, selfishness, and delusion

, and until we adequately address these imbalances of the mind it will be difficult to create and sustain positive solutions toward our most difficult global challenges. For hundreds of years, contemplative practices have been used as a sustainable means for cultivating the mind and heart in ways that give rise to lasting fulfillment, compassion, and interconnectivity. Recently this has been corroborated by eminent scientists in prestigious universities who have confirmed that such practices have the ability to change the way human beings view and engage with the world. The work of the Flourish Foundation focuses on furthering the development of these contemplative approaches to support children, parents, teachers and all other members of the community in becoming effective instruments of positive change both individually and collectively.

A Heartfelt thank you to our Sponsors for this year’s Summer Luncheon! Your commitment and belief in our mission to support mental health and personal growth in K-12 students and adults through mindfulness, compassionate action, and environmental stewardship make a meaningful impact on the Wood River Valley! As well as creating an ecosystem of well-being through age-diverse programming. Our programs create a synergy across different community sectors, connecting youth and adults, parents and teachers, community leaders and elders. This synergy creates a shared language for growth and transformation, shared practices that support healthy habits of mind, and shared values for deepening human connection. We couldn’t continue to do this essential work without your support!

In the beginning of July we facilitated our first Vision Fast for teens at the Idaho Dream Ranch.   Along with revealing incredible bravery and courage, this wilderness rite of passage supported our participants in finding a re-enchantment with the natural world, reclaiming exiled parts of themselves, empoweing their personal practice, discovering the blessing of ritual, convening deeply with the more than human world, embraching their human wholeness through a nature based map,  and GETTING WILD!    Thank you to Heather Mack, the Spur Community Foundation, Mother Earth and our brave participants in helping to launch new endeavor.

We’ve wrapped up our third retreat for our high school group in South Africa! It has been a beautiful week focused on Meditation, Inner Values, interdependence, building a relationship with our natural environment, inner strength, and more. These students spent seven days building up deeper self-awareness. They had many conversations about how to bring this new self-relationship into their lives at school and at home to build a kinder community.

At the end of the retreat, one student remarked,
“I’ve never felt comfortable or at home in a new place before, and my time here made me feel so loved. I didn’t think that was what I would experience.”

Contemplating how you want to give for this year's 🤔

Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving some to what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts, and everyone has something to give.

We had a beautiful retreat weekend up at Idaho Basecamp with 18 of our Compassionate Leader students. It was a generative experience exploring Inner Values, deepening our self-awareness, and learning about each other. We’re so grateful to be able to support young people in the work of developing a healthy, intentional, thoughtful community.

Aloha! Our team just returned from our Mālama (caring, nurturing, preserving) trip to Hawaiʻi, where we spent two weeks doing trail work with Compassionate Leader alumni, the Pulaski Users Group and community partners! We had deeply meaningful experiences working alongside the amazing people who steward cultural and recreational trails in Hawaiʻi. The Mālama trip is an extension of our efforts to nurture our relationships with CLP beyond the high school program. Mahalo nui loa (thank you very much) to the generous donors who made this trip possible!

A huge thank you to the Wood River Women’s Foundation! We’re honored and grateful to be a grant recipient this year to support the mental health and personal growth of K-12 students. This grant will support program facilitation, enabling us to reach an additional nine classrooms, a significant step in meeting the soaring demand for our services. Through mindfulness and self-regulation skills training, the Mindful Awareness Program (MAP program) directly addresses the mental health challenges prevalent in our youth, as highlighted by the recent local mental health awareness initiatives. Our target recipients are the diverse student body of the Wood River Valley, particularly those in informal care settings who lack access to structured emotional and social learning opportunities.By empowering young minds with tools for emotional resilience and mental wellness, we aim to alleviate the mental health crisis in our community.

We are boundlessly grateful for all you do to support our nonprofit community, WRWF!!

Again, we are honored to have supported our friends in Makhanda, South Africa, with our second Mindfulness Retreat for high school students from Nombulelo. We brought ten students together for a seven-day retreat covering focused attention, kindness, shared humanity, and much more. The retreat was beautiful to witness the depth of learning and growth these students achieved. At the end of our week, we brought together our group from last January’s retreat and were able to hear how they had implemented their experience from the previous year. Amazing to have a growing group of young, inspired, and passionate leaders in South Africa.

In June 2024, we aim to bring another group of Compassionate Leader students from the Wood River Valley to the Eastern Cape to collaborate with this group of students.

We extend deep gratitude to Charlie, Sis Xaxa, Mama Dorothy, Este, Trells, Wayne, Nosi, and Julia for their unwavering support for these remarkable students.
