When your priorities are out of order…
Thank you, Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, for continuing to advocate for the vital services needed in our community:
Funding Cuts Jeopardize Access to Quality Healthcare and Essential Services for Families in the Keys
Some of the Florida Keys' most trusted healthcare, nutrition, and housing providers are navigating significant funding cuts that could impact the services our community has relied on for decades.
Recently, millions of dollars in government funding has been eliminated on many levels for services for low-income Keys families. These cuts are creating real challenges for agencies that have provided consistent, quality care to Keys families for years, threatening to reduce school-based health visits, nutrition programs, emergency housing, and essential women’s health services.
Two agencies that have been heavily affected are Womankind and Keys AHEC. Womankind, which has partnered with Monroe County Health Department for nearly 25 years to provide family planning services, recently learned their Title X contract is being terminated due to Health Department budget constraints. This change not only affects their service capacity but also eliminates their access to the 340B reduced prescription drug program. Without this program, medications that currently cost $125 will now cost over $900, dramatically affecting their ability to provide affordable care to patients.
Similarly, Keys AHEC is working to maintain their school-based pediatric dental and health services after cuts from the state budget, Monroe County Human Services Advisory Board, and the Health Department eliminated over $1 million in funding for children's health and dental programs.
Even facing these challenges, these local organizations remain committed to serving the women and children in our community. They are reallocating funds and exploring every possible solution to ensure that no child goes without a dental check, no woman misses her appointment, and no family is left without the care they deserve. But they will not be able to bridge this gap alone.
These funding shifts present opportunities to make meaningful impact in our community's healthcare, nutrition, and housing landscape. The organizations facing the largest cuts have strong track records of effective service delivery and community trust built over decades. With your partnership, they can keep their commitment to the families who depend on this essential care.
