A recent systemic review and meta-analysis of 16 randomized controlled trials, concluded that essential oils demonstrate promise and effectiveness for relieving symptoms associated with pregnancy. Peppermint, bitter orange, and lemon were highlighted for reducing pregnancy-associated nausea and vomiting via inhalation. Rose, peppermint, and neroli for reducing maternal anxiety when inhaled. Researchers found that eugenol helped reduce fat buildup in the liver, both in lab studies and in a preclinical model involving subjects fed a high-fat diet. It works by activating a special receptor (Olfr544) in the liver that boosts fat breakdown and energy use, while also supporting healthy gut bacteria linked to better liver health. Interestingly, when given by inhalation, eugenol showed strong potential, making it a promising future therapy that is easy for people to use. In short, eugenol appears to support liver health from multiple angles—burning fat, balancing the microbiome, and restoring key protective compounds that are often low in people with fatty liver disease.

Recent research proves that lavender EO has earned its nickname as the "Swiss Army Knife" of EOs, due to its multiple properties, mechanisms, molecular targets, and benefits.

Laboratory research showed that lavender EO possess antioxidant activity (ABTS and DPPH assays), anti-inflammatory activity similar to diclofenac, greater antidiabetic activity than acarbose, and anti-tyrosine (skin brightening) activity. Additionally, the EO strongly inhibited acetylcholinesterase activity—superior to galantamine—suggesting it is a promising natural solution to explore for the management of memory-related disorders, like Alzheimer’s disease.

Antibiotic use can disrupt the gut barrier by killing off beneficial bacteria that help maintain the integrity of the gut lining, making it more permeable to harmful substances (leaky gut). A preclinical model found that ginger EO restores the growth of cells lining the gut and speeds up the healing process after being damaged by antibiotics. During a woman’s menstrual cycle, hormonal and ANS fluctuations can cause physical and mental symptoms, especially in the luteal phase. A study tested essential oil inhalation on menstrual symptoms and ANS activity over 24 hours during follicular and luteal phases. Participants inhaled their favorite oil—pine, geranium, lemongrass, or lavender—for three minutes twice daily. Those with mild symptoms often chose geranium, while severe cases preferred lemongrass and lavender. Mild symptom sufferers showed significant nighttime decreases in parasympathetic activity, linked to symptom relief; no changes were seen in severe cases. The findings suggest certain essential oils may help regulate ANS activity and alleviate mild menstrual symptoms.
