Very exciting news! 🎉🐾 Not one, but TWO of our very own veterinarians from Keys Animal Care Center were selected to help care for the incredible canine athletes of the Iditarod this year! 🐕❄️

Before these teams even hit the trail, every dog undergoes a thorough pre-race “vet check” to ensure they’re healthy, strong, and ready for the journey ahead. During these exams, veterinarians carefully assess each dog’s overall appearance, body condition, mentation, posture, hydration, and vital signs—leaving no detail overlooked.

Beyond the physical exam, each dog must also have a microchip, complete bloodwork, and an ECG to evaluate heart health. They must be up-to-date on vaccinations and dewormed within 10 days of the race—because their safety and wellbeing always come first. ❤️

We are beyond proud to have our team play a role in such an iconic event and to help support the health of these amazing athletes every step (and paw print) of the way! 🐾🏔️

Sunset views + wagging tails = the perfect Key West combo 🌅🐾

One of our amazing doctors from Keys Animal Care Center, Dr Brown, had a blast judging the dog show at Sunset Pier—so many incredible pups, personalities, and paw-some moments! 🐶✨

And a special shoutout to our patient Bean, who took home Best Smile 😁🏆 We couldn’t be more proud!! 💙

We love being part of a community that celebrates our four-legged friends in such a fun way 🐾

Meet our March Patient of the month Salty Kruth! Below Salty’s owners have been so kind to introduce us with a bio.
Hi, I’m Salty Dawg, named after my future, love of the ocean and the infamous Salty Dog Saloon in Homer, Alaska.

I am 5 months young and 46 pounds heavy, I’m growing like a w**d. My mom’s a golden retriever and my dad’s a Labrador retriever, making me as my parents like to call me, a Goldadoor.

As a 8 week old puppy, I drove across country in an RV for 3 weeks movinng here It was alot of fun but I think, but I think I drove my parents crazy because keep repeating, “whose crazy idea was it to travel across country with a new puppy?”

I live in Key West, where the water’s warm and so are the coconuts. My parents are teaching me to be a water baby, so I can live up to my “Salty” name.

Currently, I’m taking swimming lessons at dog beach and learning the ropes on the boat. My dad’s got big plans for me - he wants me to be a “Crabador” extraordinaire. We’ll see about that.

Come summer, I’m off to Sequim, Washington to learn the art of Dungeness crabbing. Don’t worry, I’ll stick to the shallow end... for now. On a not-so-proud note, I failed my bird dog test when some feisty chickens hijacked my ride - I mean, who doesn’t love a good car party? I didn’t flinch, but another customer did snap a photo and ratted me out.

Right now, I’m working on my manners, trying not to jump ship when visitors arrive. Key West is my playground, and I’m soaking up all the water fun. Soon, I’ll be mastering “Coco Loco”- that’s diving & swimming for coconuts in the backyard canal, for the uninitiated.

I have my own page called “Salty Dawg” if you want to follow my adventures growing up

We are excited to share with you the first Patient of the Month for 2026: John Wayne Hemingway. This sweet, handsome boy is one of the over 60 felines who resides at the Hemingway Home and Museum.

Unlike his namesake’s “tough guy” persona, this John Wayne is the ultimate diplomat of the gardens. At 2.5 years old, he is in the prime of his youth, possessing a playful energy that he balances with a remarkably calm demeanor. While some cats at the museum prefer to nap in the shadows of the limestone mansion, John Wayne can usually be found right in the middle of the action.

John Wayne has mastered the art of the “meet and greet.” He is known among staff and visitors alike as one of the sweetest cats on the property. Whether he’s lounging near the famous swimming pool or greeting guests by the writing studio, he never misses an opportunity for a head scratch or a gentle purr. He treats every visitor like an old friend, embodying the relaxed, welcoming spirit of the island.

Thank you to the Hemingway Home and Museum for allowing us to provide veterinary care for all of their feline friends, and thank you to all of our wonder clients for a fantastic 2025. We can’t wait to see you all in 2026!
