True. Prevention is the key to holistic wellness. It is by far the most powerful tool. Manual therapists, massage therapists, and bodyworkers will need several sessions to unwind tension and imbalance in the body, getting to a neutral state. Once that occurs, we then work on keeping that body in its optimal condition. Improving circulation and flexibility also strengthens the soft tissue and helps to prevent injury from occurring. More, your regular therapist will be able to detect changes while they are small, before they become a larger issue.

It's Not Magic.

As much as I take that as a compliment when someone says I make it look easy or "Wow, that was so subtle but effective!" it is because I've devoted my time and experience to fine-tuning my techniques.

had a pretty cool experience with a trainer recently who had taken the same based certification course I did many years ago. She was shocked that I wasn't doing many of the things she had learned and was asking me how, and why.

about me, I love questions. One of the things I pride myself on is explaining the WHY of things. So I did. We had the same training but vastly different techniques. The biggest difference is that she was focused on doing things exactly the way she was taught. I, however, took my education and built on it further through trial and error.

it your own, whatever you do whether it is horsemanship, training, bodywork, or something else entirely. Learn and grow, let the animal be your teacher.

I’ve seen this more times than I can count. I’ll work on a dog and remove knots, adhesions, and imbalances only to have the owner thank me and in the same breath, pick them up by the front legs to go home. I always stop them and show them the best way to pick up their animal for their safety. However, if the owner keeps doing this, then it’s a huge red flag.

Often I get asked, “How did my animal get a knot in their (insert muscle here) or why did my pet have so much out of balance?
The truth is, it could be anything. I'll explain.

Is your horse lacking top line? Honestly, it’s not hard to build up if you know why it is lacking. There are generally three reasons your horse may struggle:

1. Nutrition. Poor nutrition with a focus on grain and “fillers” rather than alfalfa and a forage-based diet can mean empty calories. Similar to eating a bag of chips for every meal. It’s going to help you gain weight but with very little vitamin value, compared to other options.

2. Illness. My horses have chronic Lyme disease and my pony, when he flares up, tends to lose muscle quickly. This is very common that when there is illness, muscle wasting occurs. Always contact your veterinarian if you are concerned with your horse’s health.

3. Saddle Fit. This is such an incredibly important part of muscle gain. A saddle should move WITH the horse. When the muscle has freedom of movement and extended range of motion, muscle grows. Often, a saddle will sit too wide on a horse and put pressure on the shoulders, wither, and back preventing muscle growth.

I’ve lost count of how many horses I’ve seen that are ridden 6 days a week and still lack good muscle tone. It’s horrible and it can be changed. It doesn’t even take very long. This is your reminder, get your tack fit regularly by an independent evaluator and not a saddle company representative who wants to sell you something.

True! Massage can and will improve blood circulation and flexibility in even a single session. However, the power in massage is in its ability to build on itself over time. The more frequent the sessions, the better the results. Holistic wellness is a way of life, not a quick fix.
