False. There are many essential oils that are unsafe for your horse. Some can even be toxic on their own, or if used neat (undiluted).

Some things to look for would be itching, rolling, kicking at the belly, hives, hot spots, reddened areas. If you see this, stop use immediately, apply milk to the area of application to counteract the oils, and call your veterinarian.

For safety, do your research or contact a professional for advice before using any essential oils on your horse.

Muscle is integral to the functions of the body. It's true! It is in charge of supporting and stabilizing the skeleton and using the energy within to push and pull depending on the job. Muscle holds tension, that is what it's designed for but positive tension is what creates impulsion and strength.

What happens when there is muscle atrophy, and what causes it? Muscle atrophy is the loss of muscle tone whether from lack of exercise, poor nutrition, or ill-fitting equipment. Disease can also be a factor in some cases, as well. These all combine to negatively affect muscle tone.

On the flip side, all three: exercise, nutrition, and equipment are integral to creating proper muscle.
If you are interested in learning more about rebuilding muscle correctly, read my book, Body Conditioning for the Horse and Rider available on Amazon and on my website.

I feel with my fingers. I always laugh when clients ask if I need more light. I don’t use my eyes to work except to watch for a reaction from my client. When I first started with my certifications, I was unsure what I was feeling and asked a lot of questions. Often, I will find a knot or change in soft tissue and direct an owner or colleague to the area so they can feel it themselves and know what is normal, and what is not.

As a bodyworker, my hands are trained and with each case I receive more experience. I can “see” knots, feel adhesions, and striations in the soft tissue. This is perhaps the biggest reason I avoid the use of massage guns and other tools. Not only do many non-pracititioners not understand anatomy well enough to avoid injury or bruising, but they are a tsunami when instead my fingers are a gentle wave.

These tools can create damage and result in secondary issues, and should only be used by professionals. Then again, many professional bodyworkers and massage therapists I know, prefer to only use their own hands.

True. All horses have tension. The amount of tension and pattern in the body may be different in a working athlete or a pasture pet, but there will be tension regardless.

Did you know that sensitive animals are the easiest for me to work with? It’s true!

Some bodyworkers and massage therapists may prefer a stoic horse- but personally, I prefer the anxious or sensitive animal. Do you know why? Because they are so honest. They tell you everything you need to know immediately.

For example, when working with a sensitive horse or dog they often overreact dramatically or shy away from the area that is the most sore or tender. This gives away where I should focus. I will work on EVERY other area to help them relax and release endorphins. Then, I approach the sore area slowly and wait patiently for them to stop bracing. My patience is often rewarded with the best releases.

Listen to your animal, they are the greatest teachers.

I wish people would stop assuming that when their horse or dog gets massage therapy, it’s a “spa day”. This is not a boujee experience we offer to animals. The musculoskeletal system is incredible and multi-faceted. Often when I speak to people about the benefits they tell me they do acupuncture and chiropractic care, but not massage. Funnily enough, the muscle, which is the focus of massage therapy, is what stabilizes and supports the skeletal system. Why do people think they can affect the skeleton with chiropractic but completely ignore the other side of the same coin? When an animal gets regular massage or bodywork, it holds the skeleton with less bracing and subluxations. It strengthens the body as a whole. Let’s change the stigma around massage and focus on how it can be a powerful tool in your toolbox when it comes to overall wellness.
