After watching many affected by the flooding in Kihei year after year, and being so loud online about the issues it causes from property damage, physical injuries, and traffic congestion. It seems many are not sure how or where to take action. Here are a few places to start.
Join the Kihei Community Association. The county does listen to them, and the louder they are the more they will be listened. The way they get louder is to get more members. You do no have to live or own property in Kihei to join. You can also keep up with the latest plans for all of South Maui including Wailea and Makena. It is cheap, easy, and gives you an amplified voice in the community. http://gokihei.org
Join the local groups helping to restore watersheds including but not limited to Save the Wetlands Kula Community Watershed Alliance, East Maui Watershed Partnership, Mauna Kahālāwai Watershed Partnership, Maui Soil and Water District, watershed, Leeward Haleakala Watershed Restoration Partnership, South Maui Save the Wetlands, are just a few. These groups are making slow but impactful differences that not only restore native plants, animals and cultural places while protecting Maui's natural beauty, but also will protect us from flooding in natural sustainable ways.
Please feel free to add more conservation resources below. Local, culturally minded are especially appreciated. We CAN make change, but it will take getting off of social media and actually doing the work.
