On this first day of black history month, I wanted to share the most beautiful journey into blackness I’ve ever experienced. My trip to Johannesburg South Africa. I went with some of my fellow black spa owners and had the privilege of being immersed in the culture, the sights, the sounds, and most importantly, the people. I was humbled by the gratitude my African brothers and sisters showed daily despite hardships and struggles. But most importantly I learned Africa is not just hardship and struggle as I learned watching Sally Struthers tell me “you can feed a child for .25 cents a day” as a child in the 1980’s. It’s strength. It’s persevering. It’s making something beautiful with what is left behind. It’s nature. It’s wild life. It’s Nelson Mandela. It’s Zulu celebrations. It’s easy smiles and big greetings. It being told “welcome home sister”. It’s a feeling, I’ll never forget and am so grateful for. I witnessed living black history. It’s bigger than just a month. We ARE black history in the making. Let’s make it beautiful.
