4 Functions of behavior and what they mean !

Attention
β’ Definition: The behavior occurs to gain social
attention or a reaction from others (e.g., teachers, parents, peers).
Example: A child throws a toy and looks at the
teacher to see if she reacts or comes over.
Escape (or Avoidance)
β’ Definition: The behavior is used to avoid or get
away from something undesirable, like a task, demand, or situation.
Example: A student screams when given a
worksheet, and the teacher removes the task.
Access to Tangibles
Definition: The behavior happens to get a
desired item or activity.
β’ Example: A child cries at the store to get candy
and stops crying once they receive it.
Sensory (Automatic)
β’ Definition: The behavior feels good or meets a
physical need for the individual, not dependent on others.
Example: A child rocks back and forth because
it is soothing, even when alone.
If you want a quick memory trick, you can remember the acronym "SEAT":
Sensory, Escape, Attention, Tangible.
