Beginning in 1971, our original ambulance was a 1962 Chevrolet station wagon owned by Walter Albrecht, a charter member. A short time later, Killingworth resident and philanthropist Marion Platt donated $3,000 which allowed KAA to purchase a used 1964 Cadillac ambulance from the town of Greenwich. Since that time, KAA has progressed through a series of ambulances, changing between the “Caddies”, t
o the van style, and then to the box design; which we currently use. Our first ambulance was garaged at an auto repair shop that was located where the commercial space presently sits opposite Patrick Drive on Route 80. It was then relocated to space donated by the Killingworth Volunteer Fire Company Station 1 in 1974, until 1982 when the current KAA Headquarters was completed on land leased from the town. KAA is a member of the Valley Shore Mutual Aid Association. This association is comprised of several towns which include: Chester, Clinton, Deep River, Durham, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, Madison, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook. We work together providing Emergency Ambulance Services for our own towns and when needed the other Mutual Aid towns; thus ensuring there is an Ambulance when needed. KAA works alongside members of the Killingworth Volunteer Fire Company’s Rescue Squad (Rescue 8) at the location of the incident or medical emergency. We also work closely with the Middlesex Hospital Paramedic Program; Paramedics from Middlesex Hospital respond from either Middlesex Hospital in Middletown or the Shoreline Clinic in Westbrook. The Paramedics will ride along with us when patients require more advanced care. During our early years, we kept “busy” with fewer than 50 calls per year. KAA offers various classes throughout the year including CPR, First Aid, and EMT certification. We also enjoy providing demonstrations and tours of our equipment and Ambulance.
