WINTER IS COMING..... PREPAREDNESS IS KEY!

🌨 After highlighting some of our winter weather headlines this morning, we wanted to touch on some of the changes that have been made to cold weather headlines starting this year.
🌬 The cold weather headline changes shown below were made to eliminate the need for a minimum wind speed being met in order to issue a headline. Headline decisions will now be made by assessing the wind chill (which factors in wind) and the actual temperature (without wind), based on whichever is coldest. Also note that different parts of Wisconsin have different thresholds for cold weather headlines (see map).
✅ The science behind wind chill: Our bodies are constantly radiating heat, creating a warm "bubble" around us when winds are calm. When the wind blows, this heat moves away from us, speeding up heat loss.

🚨 6:45 p.m. TORNADO DRILL CANCELED! 🚨

Increasing concerns about the potential for severe weather to develop later today have prompted ReadyWisconsin and the National Weather Service to cancel this evening's 6:45 p.m. (4/11/24) statewide tornado drill.

There will be no test message issued by the National Weather Service in Green Bay, and this will not be rescheduled.

Next week is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Wisconsin with a Statewide Tornado Drill on Thursday at 1:45pm and 6:45pm. Please plan to spend a part of your day dusting off your plans for when we have severe weather occur here.

With the increasing likelihood for an impactful winter storm Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for east-central and northeast WI. Strong northerly winds and periods of heavy snow will impact the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. More info to follow.

Widespread accumulating snow is forecast from late Thursday night through Friday afternoon. The greatest potential for wintry weather impacts is from central to east-central Wisconsin. Several inches of snow are possible, which will likely impact the Friday morning commute.

Great reminder to plan ahead for weather!

PLEASE NOTE: TODAY Saturday March 16th, 2024, Winnebago County will begin the warning siren test season. Siren testing will be done weekly at noon until the cool fall weather arrives. Outdoor warning sirens are designed to warn people who are outside. If you don't have one, consider purchasing a NOAA weather radio for your home and/or office to warn you of severe weather when you are indoors.
