Donald Roy Smith, age 78, of Souderton, passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2024. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth (Mergner) Smith, with whom he shared almost 57 years of marriage. Born October 21, 1945, he was a son of the late Edward and Joyce Smith.

Don was a graduate of Philadelphia College of Bible. He paused his education for a couple years to marry Elizabeth, serve his country in the army, and start a family. Almost 20 years later he went on to earn a master’s degree in business administration from Eastern University while working at Eastern University as a husband and father of five.

A man skilled and gifted in many ways, Don’s life vocation always included roles of administration and leadership; whether director of World Relief Commission in Bangladesh, an assistant pastor, youth leader and Christian school administrator in a small church in Maine, maintenance supervisor at Eastern University, or CEO of Federation Housing in Philadelphia, PA. In his retirement, he worked part time at World Team mission organization and Cairn University using his diverse skills to support these para church organizations.

Having lived and worked in many places, Don has always been a part of a church community. He was an active member of Davisville Church since 1989, and most recently attended Calvary Church in Souderton since moving to Souderton Mennonite Homes in 2020.

Don’s parents were missionaries in Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) through much of his childhood. Early in his adult life Don’s heart for international missions was evident. As a young man he served in Bangladesh and Thailand, but as Don’s family grew, he realized that God desired to use his administrative skills to support international missions from home.

In his free time, he could often be found fixing, building, or improving something. Being skilled in building, problem solving, and organization, he would call himself a jack-of-all-trades but master of none.

Don was a man of steady faith in God. He deeply trusted in the goodness and sovereignty of God. He had a heart of service: to his family, his church, and the global church. He loved his family and his grandkids. He will be missed.

In addition to his wife Elizabeth (Betsy), he is survived by his children; Christine Labrum and her husband Mark of Hatfield, PA, grandchildren, Hannah and Michaella; Catherine Richman and her husband Eric of Glenside, PA, grandchildren, Sam and Abigail; David Smith of Horsham, PA; and Elizabeth Kraus and her husband Steve of Harleysville, PA, grandchildren, Rachel, Joshua, Luke, and one on the way; siblings, Robert Smith and Miriam Tierney.

He was preceded in death by his son, Daniel Smith; sibling Darlene Szkotak.

Some modern cemeteries feature only flush markers. Typically made of bronze, a grave marker may be smaller than a headstone, but it still allows for personalization. Flush markers sit both at the head and foot of a burial space. Bronze memorials still come in a variety of colors and can be custom-etched to display names, dates, faces, illustrations and other reflections of a life lived.
