Today's Myth for Monday: All Supplement Brands are the same!
A very common problem I find when helping patients involves the supplements they take. One of the features of Structural Chiropractic care is that every patient receives a set of complementary recommendations unique to them, which includes supplement and vitamin recommendations. Of course, the more specific, the better! Formulas...dosages...ingredients...they ALL matter based on brand, and no, not all brands are created equal.
Let's use Fish Oils as an example. The response given is usually "Great! I already take Fish Oils!" Ok. Good Start. I usually ask what the brand and dosages are, because I want to make sure the patient is getting exactly what they currently need. Now, I will say that sometimes a patient is taking exactly what I would recommend (in which case, fantastic! No need to spend extra money). However, usually that is not the case. Dosage levels are off (usually not enough), there are inappropriate ingredients, or (in the case of Fish Oils), they are not "molecularly distilled" to ensure highest quality possible and minimize the presence of nasty toxins like mercury. This creates a problem. You think that you're doing what you're supposed to do, but in reality things are just a bit off. That could be the reason why you're not seeing as much of a change as you'd hoped, which often creates the "I took that vitamin. It didn't help me." No one likes to hear that what they've been taking is not helping as much as they'd like, so what's the solution.
You have a couple of options. There are many websites who specialize in rating certain brands, where you can do your own research. One is www.consumerlabs.com, which is a paid site that will give you consumer information. Another is www.labdoor.com, which is free site that ranks many different categories. Personally, I like the latter site, as I feel it gives you the best info at no cost. But what if you don't want to have to go through all that.
At all locations where I see patients, I always carry supplements from brands that I know and trust; brands that I can vouch for that have the highest quality (and if I don't carry it there, I can get it shipped to you). In fact, you can't find these brands in a store, as they're only available through either online markets or physician-only sources. The two brands I trust are "Protocol For Life" for supplements ("Protocol For Life" is to Acura as "NOW" brand is to Honda) and "Klaire Labs" for probiotics. While these supplements are more expensive than the brands you can get at your local pharmacy, you get what you pay for, which is a higher quality product. Now, every time you take the supplement, you can rest assured that you're taking the right thing, and you're getting the most out of your complementary recommendations! That way you can get the most out of your care.
